If you haven’t been watching Adventure Time, here’s a great example of what you’re missing. If you have, you’re already familiar with the Land of Ooo, and it’s probably occurred to you at least once that it would be a great setting for a video game.
Apparently we aren’t alone in thinking this, because a couple weeks ago, show creator Pendleton Ward tweeted out some concept sketches for an Adventure Time game that got some attention. They’re dope as hell, and if you haven’t seen them yet, you should definitely check them out before reading on.
Awesome, right? Well, we got in touch with Pendleton to ask a couple questions about these sketches and to find out whether he actually wants to make this whole Adventure Time game thing happen. Here are his responses!
This whole idea you sketched out of a physics-based Adventure Time video game is incredibly cool! How serious are you about actually trying to get a real Adventure Time game made?
Damn Hell Serious.
What are some of your favorite games? Are there any in particular that inspired this idea?
my favorite games.. ehmm.. A Boy and His Blob.. The Tron FPS… LIMBO (the xbox downloadable that came out recently).. ehmm.. I really liked Seiklus and all the other games that Clysm made using Game Maker.. hmm.. I like Myst a lot.. I like adventure games that are full of mystery and story without dialog.. I like discovering secrets.. like checking behind every waterfall in every game that has waterfalls.. like Oblivion.. or.. I was just playing Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.. which had a secret behind a waterfall.. ehmm.. i love secret rooms.. and finding places that feel like secret areas.. like that little cat village in the middle of the Monster Hunter Wii maps.
Do you see this as being 2D or 3D game?
3D game. I’m thinking about katamari inspired graphics.. simple and stylized..
There’s a lot of stuff about Adventure Time that feels a bit game-y. Just about everything, from your use of chiptunes in the soundtrack to little details in the Land of Ooo, seems to incorporate bits (no pun intended) of retro aesthetic. What is it about that era and style that appeals to you?
I grew up in it. It makes me feel warm and happy.
Anything else?
I love games.. I want the Adventure Time game to be so good.. I will work every waking extra hour that I have.. to make it as excellent as i can.. mmm.. mmhmm..
Thanks so much for talking to us, Pendleton!
I don’t think I could be more psyched about this. If any talented indie devs are reading this: GET IN TOUCH WITH PEN AND MAKE THIS GAME HAPPEN. For the good of America. Okay? Okay.
Alright, readers! Those of you who watch Adventure Time: what would you want out of an Adventure Time game? Those of you who don’t: would you play the game that exists in Pendleton’s head? Let us know in the comments!

I can totally see him being a Boy and his Blob fan, that makes just so much sense.
I know everyone wants an Adventure Time game, but I’d rather he start with Bravest Warriors, as that seems more straightforward and no one but me would care if it was weaksauce, then take everything they learned on that game and do Adventure TIme right.
it think BeMo should have unlockable mini games that are in mostly 8-bit style, and tree trunks house should be an area were you can go, and i also thought Ooo should be open world but the levels are separate
Man. I’ve been a huge Adventure Time fan for about 4 years now. I would love to see a game… I LOVE TO SEE IT SO HARD.
It would totally need those exploration elements like Pen was talking about. I think that through that you could convey a lot of the things that are really funny about that world too. By revealing little weird pieces of it a bit at a time. I liked his example of the cat village in Monster Hunter Tri, hahaha. I love that his game idea totally has the wacky physics of the show too, haha.

I totally agree on the wacky physics comment. As long as you can click down both sticks at any time to do Finn’s wiggly arm dance on demand, I’m sold.
The use of Jake’s Stretchie powers to overcome obstacles would be nice. Better yet, the ability to switch between both characters, who have different abilities, at intervals in the game. I would love to see an original story, because if I want content from the show, I’ll just watch the show. Funny, I always thought adventure time would be an 8-bit game.
the game should be like an rpg since it has magic and swords also it should be cool if you could create your own character since there are alot of crazy characters in the show
