Joe Larson’s masterpiece ASCIIpOrtal was finally released today! The announcement containing the download links is here on Larson’s website, but the site has gone down a few times over the course of today (thanks, Slashdot!). It’s currently up again, but just in case, here is a mirror. Now stop reading this and go play it!!

Yup. Still awesome.
If you haven’t already, check out my interview with the programmer and Bytejacker aficionado himself on the development of ASCIIpOrtal right here: http://www.bytejacker.com/blog/interview-joe-larson-creator-of-asciiportal
Readers! Have you had a chance to play ASCIIpOrtal yet? If so, ISN’T IT AWESOME? Let us know how you feel in the comments.

i wish the game was featured in free indie rapid fire for three episodes in a row…
)))
Yeah, it’s pretty damn great. The music is killer.
YAY!!!!!
Weeeeee!
and joe, thank you so much for sources and linux version!
i loe you!
that’s it for today. 26 level!
Seconded. Linux support and sources make you Capain Super-Cool, Joe.
I say there should be a full-on, 1 hour review… lawl
AGREED!!
and a design tour!
how about it, joe?
Heh, seriously, thanks. I don’t know if I could keep your attention for a whole hour, but I might be able to do a walk though one time of the 50 original levels. Was gonna let things settle a bit first, let folks actually play the game before I show them how to beat it. Should be about a half-hour, tho, which would mean I’d have to gamerdrome it.
The other option is I was planning on doing a 10 minute video explaining the math of how I got that view to work. Which would you all rather see?
Boy would I love you to go into the maths of the portal views.
I’m a maths nerd so I realise probably in the minority, but my feeling is anyone can do a walkthrough video – I’m sure there will be plenty on youtube in a few weeks – but an explanation of how the guts of the game works is something that only Joe is in a position to do right now.
I’d also love to see a video on how the math works.
I have almost no programming knowledge, so I have no idea if this is feasible or not, but since Joe was kind enough to give the source away, would it be possible for a Flash version of ASCIIpOrtal to ever exist? That would massively expand the audience, and this game deserves to be seen by as many people as possible. It’s an entirely different beast than Portal: The Flash Version, and in my opinion, a much more interesting one.
Alchemy.
Adobe has a library for turning C programs into flash games. It’s been used for Doom and various roguelikes, and Peter Nitche, the master of text mode alchemy, and I are going to bring ASCIIpOrtal to a browser with a number of updates and improvement.
The reason there isn’t already an ASCIIpOrtal online is that Peter discovered Alchemy has a problem with strings, and ASCIIpOrtal uses lots of strings. However, I’m gonna pop the hood, write the strings out, and add a few things. It’s coming, but don’t hold your breath.
this is grate !
Now we just need a Mac port of this game ^_^
MertenNor
You’re kidding, right. Please tell me that was a joke. After all the work I put into it making it available for every frickin platform out there please tell me you’re joking and you’re not just ignorant of everything that I’ve done for you.
Hahahahaha, Joe.
@MertenNor: Here you go: http://willhostforfood.com/users/C/cymon/asciiportal-1.0-osx-univ.zip
Every single platform avaiable, right?
I think BSD, Amiga, smartphones, Opensolaris, etc. Don’t count as platforms then.
Nah, Just kidding. Great job with that game.
