If you follow us on Twitter, you probably saw us retweeting some business over the weekend about a BASTION SOMETHING SOMETHING. If you don’t follow us on Twitter, missed the stream, or just didn’t know what the hell we were talking about, Giant Bomb and Supergiant Games have been teasing a video series for a while now called “Building the Bastion,” where the developers of upcoming indie coolfest Bastion shoot short videos over the course of the game’s development to let us know what’s happening. Think dev blogs, but with less censorship, more indieness, and a generally pleasant feeling of reality.
The first episode was incorporated into this weekend’s usually-paywalled Whiskey Media Happy Hour, where the Giant Bomb crew (as well as every other site in the Whiskey Media network) gather together, drink heavily, and put on a wonderful live show with live question-answering and live awful-video-effect-using and all sorts of live chaos. It’s excellent, it’s live, and you should probably watch it every week.
For those who don’t, though, here’s this week’s special free episode. On hand to explain the video, perform the live demo and answer fan questions was everyone’s favorite Greg Kasavin (who we interviewed at length about Bastion right here earlier this month), as well as designer Amir Rao, engineer Gavin Simon, and artist Jen Zee.
For those of you looking for a little context, we’ve thrown together an extremely useful Table of Contents for the above video so you know when to expect what. You’re welcome.
TABLE OF CONTENTS:
02:10 – The point where Happy Hour actually begins. (Live demo, folks!) Ryan Davis gets his interview on with the four Bastion team members.
04:19 – Episode 1 of “Building the Bastion” starts. Definitely peep this, because there are some really cool, candid conversations in here about building a game, how to present your game at PAX, and a lot more. Also: rotten vegetables.
21:15 - They show off an early, early, early build of Bastion from October of 2009 – after the game had only been in development for 5 weeks and before they had an artist on staff. Which explains all the D&D monsters you’re seeing.
28:15 - A live Q&A and walkthrough of a brand new level in Bastion, showing off a couple new weapons and enemies. I don’t think I’m ever gonna get over just how gorgeous this damn game is shaping up to be.
Aaaaand that’s about it. The Giant Bomb guys have given the cameras back to Supergiant Games, so we can expect a new episode of “Building the Bastion” sometime in the very near future. In the meantime, why not kick five bucks to the people making this awesomeness happen so you can watch every Whiskey Media Happy Hour each Friday this month? Yes, they’re all this good. Yes, I promise. No, this isn’t gonna be like that time I tricked you into signing up to the Columbia Record Club.
