Alright, full disclosure: that Mario ‘Sleep of Reason’ shirt was great and all, but as it turns out, it’s only the second-best Mario-themed art history shirt available on the internet. This isn’t our faults, though; the real winner had been out of print for months and was completely unavailable.
That is, until recently. Threadless recently restocked a huge selection of shirts, including “This Is Not a Pipe”, Genée Cosden’s game-nerd take on art-nerd favorite “The Treachery of Images.” If you’re confused, educate yourself, then come back and laugh with the rest of us.

I have one of these. The worst part of it is that you have to explain it to EVERYONE. My art nerdery and my game nerdery have very limited appeal among the general populace, I guess. Losers!
That said, I adore the shirt. Its ridiculously brilliant.
If somebody asked me what it meant, I would simply reply “dude, it’s not FOR you.”
Then again, I did take four years of art history in college, so maybe I’m a pretentious dick. MAGRITTE 4 LYFE!!1!1
One of my favorite things ever is when Scott McCloud gets into this in “Understanding Comics.”
