Getting Double Kills without the booming announcer voice doesn't feel quite the same, but it'll do.

I have kind of a big secret: I play a lot of Halo. Like, a lot of it. In my time with Halo 3, I managed 3,440 multiplayer kills, and in the half-month I’ve had Halo Reach, I’ve already hit 1,453. I have a problem, and it’s something I’m working on, okay?

The upshot of all this is that I’m pretty well-equipped to tell you whether or not a Halo fan project is worth its salt. Here’s one that is. Halo: Out With a Whimper is a rad little fan project that has been in production since about 2007, and has come a whole hell of a long way since then. Basically, it’s a remarkably authentic-feeling 2D sidescrollification of Halo, and it totally works. They released a playable demo earlier this month that began making the rounds on blogs this past week, and it’s absolutely worth your time to check out.

Is it a coincidence that the only episode of Bytejacker to feature Halo is also the best episode? Yes. Absolutely yes.

The demo they just released is a three-stage reimagining of the Firefight mode introduced in Halo: ODST, and it’s kind of a blast.  It’s an incredibly detailed game, with some stunning spritework and sound design. Believe it or not, every single gun from Halo 3 present and accounted for, with the addition of a few custom ones they came up with themselves. Unbelievably, the game even has a lot of the major new stuff things Reach like jetpacks and armor lock, which is pretty insane considering this Out With a Whimper demo came out three days before Reach did. Fanboys, right?

The demo is totally free, and really, really good. It’s really exciting to think about where this project is gonna end up. (Hopefully, not cancelled like so many exciting fangames before it have been.)
