I have kind of a big secret: I play a lot of Halo. Like, a lot of it. In my time with Halo 3, I managed 3,440 multiplayer kills, and in the half-month I’ve had Halo Reach, I’ve already hit 1,453. I have a problem, and it’s something I’m working on, okay?
The upshot of all this is that I’m pretty well-equipped to tell you whether or not a Halo fan project is worth its salt. Here’s one that is. Halo: Out With a Whimper is a rad little fan project that has been in production since about 2007, and has come a whole hell of a long way since then. Basically, it’s a remarkably authentic-feeling 2D sidescrollification of Halo, and it totally works. They released a playable demo earlier this month that began making the rounds on blogs this past week, and it’s absolutely worth your time to check out.

Is it a coincidence that the only episode of Bytejacker to feature Halo is also the best episode? Yes. Absolutely yes.
The demo they just released is a three-stage reimagining of the Firefight mode introduced in Halo: ODST, and it’s kind of a blast. It’s an incredibly detailed game, with some stunning spritework and sound design. Believe it or not, every single gun from Halo 3 present and accounted for, with the addition of a few custom ones they came up with themselves. Unbelievably, the game even has a lot of the major new stuff things Reach like jetpacks and armor lock, which is pretty insane considering this Out With a Whimper demo came out three days before Reach did. Fanboys, right?
The demo is totally free, and really, really good. It’s really exciting to think about where this project is gonna end up. (Hopefully, not cancelled like so many exciting fangames before it have been.)

Downloading it right now :3
Also, this is unrelated to this but didnt know where else to put it, u would like to fix the fact that there is a AppJudgement video uploaded to the Bytejacker youtube so… just letting u know in case u didnt know already.
but yeah, i hope this is a long demo to keep me busy for a while :3
It’s not. At least I didn’t think so.
So the only thing you can do is fight endless waves of bad guys? Yup, I’m done with this. Didn’t really enjoy it either, but maybe that’s because I’m not bungie’s little whipping boy like some interns I know.
This is why I never release a game before it’s “done”. Maybe the final game will be amazing. Maybe it will change the world if only we’d play it. But I’m not going to play it and neither are a lot of people because after playing _this_ we’re all out the door.
Well, except for Nick here. Enjoy your little game fanboy.
Hahaha, are you serious? Yes, all you do in this is fight endless waves of bad guys, like in MASSIVELY UNPOPULAR games such as…actually, I can’t even narrow that down, because that’s pretty much every video game ever.
For what it’s worth, I haven’t enjoyed a single-player Halo campaign since the first one. I just dig the multiplayer a lot, especially because my friends play a lot of it. With an attitude like that, I can’t imagine you have the same problem. Chill out, dude!
Harsh words from a man whose last published work was a ASCII version of Portal.
Fanboy indeed.
I applaud this response.
Initially I felt to defend myself, to point out that I did ASCIIpOrtal because of the challenege of the view-type. To point out that I like Portal because it did something innovative and that Halo only innovation was the sticky grenade.
But then, you’re right. I’m a fanboy. Luve me some GlaDOS. I won’t deny it.
