What with the first ever three-way Indie Kombat coming up soon (Chevy Ray vs Sophie H vs Arthur Lee, if you hadn’t heard), I figured it’d be fun to get in touch with the three participants and see if they’d be interested in some pre-game smack-talking.
The first reply I got was from Sophie Houlden, and it lived up to all my hopes and dreams. Here it is, in full:
Hey Nick,
Well, I can appreciate you think the bytejacker readers will be interested (on account of how I’m taking part) but I don’t want anyone getting too excited, thinking there will three really great games coming out of this because, let’s face it, Arthur Lee And Chevy Ray are quite incapable of making games that are even remotely entertaining.
I mean, if it was a competition in ripping off cave story, or ripping off flixel then maybe, just maybe, these guys could do something remotely on a par as the awesomeness my entry will be.
but don’t fear, I shall make sure it stays entertaining, and by entertaining I mean making a game so awesome the other guys will be painfully embarrased to even call themselves game makers, it will make the parents of Arthur and Chevy want to go after them with chainsaws so they can give the ‘having children who don’t suck’ thing a fresh start.
suffice to say whether or not those babies can, I most certainly will, bring it.
(if they have a problem with that, they will have to tell it to the cleaning lady on monday)
love,
Sophie Houlden
Damn. She brought it. Your moves, Arthur and Chev.

Wha-? What’s going on?
You did forget the primer, Nick.

First Robert Fearon of SYNSO/RetroRemakes fame and Farbs of… Farbes… threw down. The object was to have a laugh, do a little good natured slagging both in post and in your game, and make a couple of games. First was Robert Fearon of SYNSO/RetroRemakes fame vs Farbs of… Farbs…. The result looks good, but we’ve yet to see a download from either. Next was ExciteMike who make a lot of stuff you’ve never heard of vs Ichiro who made AAAAAA(etc) a reckless disregard (etc). So far we’ve seen a post of two from ExciteMike, but nothing recent.
Now I guess we’ve got a 3-way coming up. Can we at least finish one before we start the next? I mean finished, like Downloads in the public’s hands and voting finished. I like the idea of indie combat, But I feel like the point is missed. We want games from these.
Haha, Joe, I would’ve linked to some sort of official post on the three-way battle, only there isn’t one yet. The only reason we know about the fearsome threesome is thanks to Twitter chatter right now. Your comment was as good a primer as any, though!
To your concern about the games not being posted or playable yet: that’s not really the fault of anyone involved. Xbox Live Indie Games are notoriously unpredictable when it comes to how quickly they’ll be approved, and since THIS happened ( http://twitter.com/FarbsMcFarbs/status/20126073854 ), who knows when Fish Squid Time Machine will actually be out.
However, Fish Fish Bang Bang (Fearon’s game) is totally done. I’ve played it, actually, and it’s sweet. He’s just sitting on it until FSTM comes out to keep the competition fair. And actually, Captain Lambe (ExciteMike’s entry) is done too, but he’s hanging onto his as well to wait for A) Farbs and Fearon’s round to officially end and B) for Ichiro to catch up.
So yeah, the fact that there aren’t any publicly playable games yet is a bummer, but it’s all due to XBLIG being a bummer and the participants practicing good sportsmanship. Just wait a little longer, because if they’re all like Fish Fish Bang Bang, they’re worth the patience.
Ohhhh. Okay, I get it now.
ahaha, i love the Scott Pilgrim reference! :D
First round games are available.

Unfortunately, as good as Farb’s looks Rob’s game is getting my vote by default because I CAN PLAY IT. XBLA only? Well I can’t play that.
