When Cave Story first came out over five years ago, almost nothing was really known about Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, the dude who’d spent half a decade of his life single-handedly crafting the game. And, unbelievably, the mystery of who Pixel really is has remained more or less intact since then. However, a new video Nintendo has pushed out to the Wii’s Nintendo Channel to promote this week’s WiiWare re-release of the game does an excellent job of letting us know who to thank for the splendor that is Cave Story.
The video, embedded below, is the most recent entry in Nintendo’s “Developer’s Voice” series, and it’s remarkable for a few reasons:
1. You actually get to see Pixel’s face, and guess what? He’s totally adorable. As someone who spent the past few years a little bit nervous to see what Pixel would actually look like, it’s kind of a relief to finally see who all that music and all those characters came out of.
2. It’s way less of a commercial than you’d expect. Instead of selling you a game you already want, they spend a lot more time focusing on how the original Cave Story came to be, as well as what they’ve changed for the WiiWare edition.
3. You get to find out what inspired Balrog’s character design, and guess what: it wasn’t a lunchbox. Yeah, I was surprised, too.

I wanna hug that guy so much right now
^This
it said a bar of soap not a lunch box………moron
I think you misread the sentence: “guess what: it wasn’t a lunchbox.”
The inference here being that Nick always thought Balrog looked like a lunchbox, and was surprised to find out he was based on something else. Additionally, I’d appreciate it if you left the name-calling for another site – we try to be a respectful community here.
Now let’s talk about how awesome Pixel is.
“Get A BRAIN! MORANS”
Your face is stupid.
I’ve always liked these Developer’s Choice videos… you know, on the rare occasion I open the Nintendo Channel on my Wii. I loved the one for Bonsai Barber and it actually convinced me to buy the game. A casual shrub-clipping game from the guy who directed Goldeneye on the N64? Tres chic!
Thing that impresses me about Pixal is he’s just this guy, you know. He did this thing this one time and it blew up. He’s just living his life and now he’s gonna be suddenly very well off, I’m guessing. Maybe not a millionaire overnight, maybe. but the things I take away from Pixal is (1) if you never do anything else finish one really cool thing when you can and (2) then just live your life. Maybe someone will come back to you and turn this one thing into something great, maybe they won’t. Don’t go sitting on your haunches dreaming of the glory days and that one thing you did. Maybe you’ll be pleasantly surprised down the road, but you won’t be if you keep hoping you will be.
Does that make any sense.
The point is he’s just an average guy and look at how happy he is because of this.
he kinda reminds me of tingle (that’s not a bad thing, btw)
probably the jawline.
sorry guyz. i was in a really bad mood when i wrote that. im really sorry.
cave story is my favorite game period and i hope pixel gets filthy rich of of it.
jesus christ… one of those Balrog prototypes is terrifying. The one with the big eyes, no other features, and big, long limbs.
