When Cave Story first came out over five years ago, almost nothing was really known about Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, the dude who’d spent half a decade of his life single-handedly crafting the game. And, unbelievably, the mystery of who Pixel really is has remained more or less intact since then. However, a new video Nintendo has pushed out to the Wii’s Nintendo Channel to promote this week’s WiiWare re-release of the game does an excellent job of letting us know who to thank for the splendor that is Cave Story.

The video, embedded below, is the most recent entry in Nintendo’s “Developer’s Voice” series, and it’s remarkable for a few reasons:

1. You actually get to see Pixel’s face, and guess what? He’s totally adorable. As someone who spent the past few years a little bit nervous to see what Pixel would actually look like, it’s kind of a relief to finally see who all that music and all those characters came out of.

2. It’s way less of a commercial than you’d expect. Instead of selling you a game you already want, they spend a lot more time focusing on how the original Cave Story came to be, as well as what they’ve changed for the WiiWare edition.

3. You get to find out what inspired Balrog’s character design, and guess what: it wasn’t a lunchbox. Yeah, I was surprised, too.
