That’s not an exaggeration. This highly simple, highly infuriating Flash game by GAMEDESIGN.jp could result in you hating cats for the rest of your natural life. And if you already do, hey, that’ll make this easier!
Chat Noir is a game about trapping a cat in a hex-based grid of green circles. Unfortunately, the cat you’ve been tasked to trap is some sort of genius cat who will outsmart you at every corner.
You will not beat this game on your first try. Or on your first five tries. But trust me, the satisfaction you feel when you finally conquer this animal is immense.

Is there any assurance that this game is beatable every time. I managed to beat it by a lucky initial set up after the 4th or 5th game, and then I wasn’t able to beat it until the 20th or so game after that. It didn’t make me hate it tho. Rather I kept analyzing the “best” strategy for beating the game and I have serious questions that it’s beatable every time.
Here’s a couple of thoughts:
1. If your placing pieces next to the cat, chasing it to the edge, you will lose.
2. If you think of the cats path as straight lines from the cat to the edge then there are 6 possible straight-line exit paths the cat can choose.
3. Blocking anywhere along that straight-line exit path is as good as anywhere else for cutting off that straight-line path.
3. Using the existing dots is the only way to keep ahead of the cat.
4. Therefore when choosing where in the straight-line exit path to place your blocking dot choose a spot that can through a series of similar blocks eventually meet up with an existing dot.
I follow this strategy and managed to trap the cat two or three times, but not every time. It’s possible my quickly generated strategy isn’t perfect, but chances are the random nature of the game means occasionally a game board is just not winable. And that’s no fun.
On twitter Metnor got all creamy in his pants about catching the cat so I had to show him how it was done:

and again

Tho I’m far from perfect.

I’ve only been playing for the past 15 minutes and I can already catch the cat about one out of 4 times, and I can generally look at a board and tell if I’m screwed, tho sometimes the cat makes a stupid move and surprises me. Walks right into my trap as it were.
It’s not overly hard. You’re right Joe, if you want to beat the game you have to use the available dots. The randomized dots make it hard sometimes, but usually it’s beatable. I can beat 8 out of 10 games.
Beated it on the third attempt, think like a cat and u ll have him in your paw ;)
nya….
Third attempt for me, too. I jsut kept resetting until I had decently spaced colored dots. :P I guess that’s cheating then?
Yes, i’ts cheating, like pressing random positions in minesweeper to get a wide area open, and then working from there :-)
I beat it on 4th attempt, is easy to “understand” the little cat’s brain (cats are that easy to predict when surrounded by green dots… just like myself if i were in that situation! )
It’s amusing, and yes, it puts you in the mental state “one more and i’ll show that little rascal” so it gets the job done, nice game :-D
