Remember Pokémon? Ever wish it was, like, super messed-up? Well, lucky for us, someone somewhere on the internet totally has our back, because this pixel art showed up on Tumblr recently and straight-up refuses to leave my mind.
What a fantastically arbitrary selection of Pokémon, too. I don’t think anyone was ASKING for a terrifying, anthropomorphic Golduck, but now it’s something we can all enjoy. Together.
I’ve spent approximately the past half-hour trying to find the source of these, to no avail. If you have any clues where these beautifully creepy monstrosities are from, definitely drop us a line.
You know, looking at this pixel art has us wondering: how would you feel about a “dark” Pokémon reboot? Let us know in the comments!

That actually looks pretty cool. I’m just glad it’s not pornographic or anything.
You mean pokemon coliseum for the gamecube right?
*flees*
You know, if you think about it, Pokemón already is pretty disturbing as it is. We’re talking about a game in which the whole point is to capture wild animals, some of them pretty damn huge, and squeeze them in these tiny, TINY balls. Oh yeah, and the only time they come out of these fiendish devices – which are probably the most painful and uncomfortable thing in the world – is so they can take part in deadly battles against other animals. Not to mention that the only reason the protagonist puts them through this living hell is because s/he is a selfish douche bag who’s in it for the fame: it’s all about becoming the number 1 tamer and shoving that title in everyone’s faces. :D
The fact that all of that is displayed in a really cute, harmless package just makes it all the more creepy. Kinda like any child in any horror movie ever made, or a Hello Kitty chainsaw. It’s the contrast of a cutesy presentation with a kind of inhumane idea (if you stop to think about it) that makes it disturbing, strange and kind of interesting.
I’m not criticizing Pokemón, though. The fact that they managed to turn a game that’s basically about cockfighting into a worldwide phenomenon is actually pretty awesome. If its gameplay were more to my liking, I’d definitely be all over them (I tried Red or Blue waaaaaay back in the day, and only made it about half of the way through before I got kind of bored with the fights and all the training).
Ha ha, now that’s what the game Pokemon The Evil Inside needs, pokemon who looks like they just went on a date with Cthulu!
A dark reboot of Pokemon? I wouldn’t mind that (although I haven’t played since Red…) but by “dark”, I’d prefer it that the pokemon looked tough and ferocious, not um…. like these things.
Okay, seriously, someone get Leon and Barry in here to clean these things up, I’m gonna vomit up my Jill sandwich over here.
hahaha. i love this! a dark reboot is just what the series needs. it series hasn’t REALLY deviated from the core concepts placed in the first batch of games. every iteration has been simply an expansion of levels and creatures. i’d shell out good money for a mature pokemon.
