169 – What hatches from primordial egg.
You remember being a kid and not being able to wait for Jurassic Park on the Genesis because you got to play as a raptor? All the exciting possibilities ran through your head. You saved up your money for weeks, spent it all in one shot, got the game home, and then finally got to play it.
And it was seriously one of the most terrible games of all time.
Well don’t worry, this game makes up for it. Logan Ames (Nothing) has created a platformer that’s exactly what you’d want out of a game where you take the role of a dinosaur; it’s basically about fast-paced stomping, eating, and terrorizing tiny fools in pith helmets. There’s also an system of leveling up that reminds me, at least visually, of the SNES game E.V.O.: Search for Eden. Eating more evolves you into a bigger, stronger, faster dinosaur.
Visually, the animations are smooth and the little sprites do a decent enough job of emoting. I would’ve liked to see a bit more unity in design between the actual dinosaur and his enemies/surroundings, as they almost look ripped from two different games. That said, the dinosaur sprite in all its forms is smoothly animated and well-rendered. This is one of those games where you level up to see what you’ll look like next just as much as you do to upgrade your abilities.
All in all a very fun game, and another gem of the competition. You can grab it here (Windows only).
