‘troid, an Asteroidsesque PC game by hermitgames, is now free! This is important because, presumably, it didn’t used to be.
The game plays more or less like its namesake, but with a pretty clever twist: you’re rewarded with a score multiplier for shooting three like-sized ‘stroids in a row, putting a risk-reward twist on just shooting the big ones first. Pretty clever stuff, and certainly worth playing for $free.99.

It’s good. Good candidate for the show actually, as a free indie of the week.
It’s good, it’s pretty, I like the mechanics they throw in later levels that force you to start moving, breaking the traditional “stay put until you need to move” mechanic of asteroids. The thing that bothers me about this, and I didn’t thing it would bother me this much but it bothered me enough that I’m deleting the game and not playing it any more, the thing that bother me was that the sound when you die is a digitized f-bomb. I think it has to do with the fact that it’s jarring enough when you die with the shake and the boom that the vulgarity in my ear was just a little too much. I found myself getting angry, and not a “oh, you ain’t gonna beat me” sort of angry but like mad at the world angry. it wasn’t a good feeling.
I supposed I could play without the sound, but the other sounds are so good I’d feel like I was missing out, until I died.
Hi Joe,
So I’m kind of pleased that the player death is so affecting you had to remove the game from your machine. That sound is intended really to mirror your annoyance at death rather than increase it, and as a call back to the Llamatron / Minter swearing sfx theme.
I’m one of those weird ones who does not approve of vulgar language. I notice it and I don’t like it. And I realize on the interwebs that makes me kinda odd… well odder. Just one more thing for the stack.
The more I play it, the more I really dig this game. I put about 45 minutes into it yesterday afternoon, and the way it begins to let you pick up a couple levels before you left off is really neat. the individual per-level leaderboards are great too.
Also: it’s hard as shit. I don’t know if it’s just that I’m terrible at this genre (I am), or if it’s one of those dev-got-really-close-to-the-game-over-the-course-of-its-creation-and-lost-objectivity-regarding-its-difficulty situations, but DUDE. I die a lot. And, maybe because I’m an idiot, I never noticed the f-bomb. It just sounded, as he said, like Minternoise to me.
I also mysteriously lost my high scores after deciding to import the game into Steam today. No idea how I managed that. Time to start over! Ehhh.
If there were a couple of options, like the ability to run the game windowed or letterbox it so it’s not stretched on my widescreen display, that’d be totally sweet. Maybe throw in a gamepad mode, too. But yeah: I like ‘stroids. And, apparently, leaving comments that are longer than the blog post I originally made.
You’re right, I definitely made it too hard. Hopefully I will get to go back and sort out the configuration options and stuff, if I get time.
