This week we revisit an old classic with a new look, check out some of the most frustrating moments in gaming, and watch the emo kids revolt.
Lode Runner: XBLA, Platformer, Tozai Games, $15
Pandaland: Windows, Platformer, Svante Danielsson – LINK
In 60 Seconds: Windows, Exploration Platformer, William Broom – LINK
Bang! Heroes: Flash, Action, Three Rings – LINK
This week’s feedback question: What old-school game would you like to see remade?

Lode Runner is awesome. I would’ve bought it at first when it was 800 points, but apparently they raised the price to 1200 the day after? Sorry, that’s just too much for me at the moment.
I love the music and the whole game simply because it is so well-designed. You can really see that a real game designer worked on this. The level transitions, the keeping of the original gameplay etc. are all very good design choices.
They could’ve effed this up so badly, but they did not. Congrats!
No, no, no… they didn’t RAISE it. They CORRECTED it.
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/correction-lode-runner-costs-800-ms-points/
JERKS.
At 800 points, I wouldn’t have hesitated to say “buy.” 1200 just feels like too much, especially since the lobbies online are already empty.
I’ve walked by that Burger Shack dozens of times and never once gave it any attention… Guess I should rethink that.
Bytejacker: Now presenting unintentional culinary suggestions.
First things first, game I would most like to see remade: FINAL. FANTASY. VI*.
- *No, not VII. VII had its time in the light. It was good, don’t get me wrong, but VI will always be first in my heart, and in the hearts of many of us who were into the series before the Playstation era, with its incredible story and expressive yet somehow still 16-bit graphics. And it’s about time it got the attention it deserved.
… In 60 Seconds is great and all, but it’s only 60 seconds long…
I’d love to see FFVI given the same remake treatment that IV got on the DS. Even better, I’d love to see a PSN or XBLA release along the lines of Lode Runner or Bionic Commando: Rearmed.
Have you ever had In-N-Out? Oh, yeah, you don’t have that out on the east coast.
You didn’t link to ikillpxls.com below the show.
Lehigh? Where in the world is Lehigh? I’m in Lehi. And thanks for the forehead cam shot. Grrr.
Having a hard time with this week’s free indie of the week this week. I’ll try out Pandaland, but it just doesn’t inspire. And Bang!… I’m just tired of arrows to move, mouse to aim side-scrollers. Even steampunk couldn’t save it. I think I’m getting tired of steampunk too. I haven’t played In 60 Seconds, but it looks the best of the bunch so far.
Thanks for UPLOADING the forehead cam shot, SUCKAH!
We <3 In-N-Out. It’s the best. When were we in California last month shooting Best Job Ever we must’ve went to In-N-Out once a day.
Fun facts: there are In-N-Out stickers prominently displayed on my laptop AND on Jon’s camera.
Apparently you’ve lived in “Lehigh” for the past month here on Bytejacker. But now that you’ve moved to Lehi, I’ll be sure to update you. ;)
and In n’ out burger is the window to my soul. I’ll never turn down a double double animal style.
Sadly, now that I see that typed it comes off sexual.
It’s alright Jon, we all feel ya on this one. In-N-Out touches a special place in anyone who’s been there.
They’re building an In-N-Out right here in Utah, not 10 minutes from my front door here in Lehigh. I may as well throw away my WiiFit. One that sucker goes up I’ve got a one way ticket to fat-tard-ville.
I’d love to see a remake of the original Mario Bros. arcade game. With a bit larger play field, four player multiplayer (red, green, blue, and yellow Marios), controls/moves like from Donkey Kong for the Game Boy, and updated music and graphics.
Also, another great episode!
Must be remade, StarControl {seesmic_video:{“url_thumbnail”:{“value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/EfJo5IcWAd_th1.jpg”}”title”:{“value”:”Must be remade, StarControl ”}”videoUri”:{“value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/ZnGXHaL1AW”}}}
And I forgot to mention, you can make your own full game scenarios! A level editor always makes a game better.
I’ve figured out something about myself. I love the IDEA of level editors, but I never sit down and make a level even though I always mean to.
I do love play levels made by other people, though, and I think an easy to reach, central repository of them, like in Lode Runner, is a totally awesome value add.
For me it’s nearly the other way round… I usually want to complete the normal game, but never really do it. Sometimes I only buy games for the editor (Warcraft 3 being the prime example).
Do you know why Lode Runner got a level database while N+ wasn’t allowed one?
I don’t know if N+ wasn’t allowed a database, or if Slick/Metanet decided against one for reasons of cost, implementation, and upkeep.
I think with the huge success of LittleBigPlanet we’re going to see an increase in the number of games that allow this sort of functionality.
At least I hope we do.
Star Control’s Level Editor was somewhat unique. You wrote the story, decided how much of what would be on the map, and it procedurally generated the map for you. Of course, like I said, it was for a map that was notoriously unpopular, but that’s entirely besides the point. The focus was on the story, let the game work out the details for you.
And Anthony, you may not like the map editor yourself, but I’ll bet you were happy that it was there because you loved playing the levels that others had created.
I think it’s funny when LBP is held up as the shining pinnacle of level editing, the one that will make level editing the defacto standard. Bull. It isn’t the best. It’s just the latest. Lode Runner, as far as I know, was the first game who’s popularity was dependent on the level editor, but since then there have been a steady trickle of games that included a level editor. LBP is just the latest to trickle down. It’s good, but there will be another.
I better stop.
I could list countless games that should be remade, like Kula World and Z, but the most obvious one is:
Any 2d Sonic.
Filming at Shake Shack was a great idea. Except the part where you didn’t invite me. Watching this I thought of a great idea. You guys (me included, I could hold the boom) go around and do burger reviews at different burger places. We could call the show something like…. oh I don’t know… how about…
bitejacker?
The game i really want to see remade is: A Boy and His Blob. Majesco never released the new one on DS.
Aren’t they remaking it for Wiiware now?
But I agree, game needs remakin’!
hi, i would like to see a remake of kingdom hearts, chain of memories for the game boy to the ds, thank you for your atention,se you later
bwhahahahah….that thing you are eating…so small?!?!?!? You should come here and see what real burgers look like :D
It’s about quality, my friend, not quantity. That is one delcious burger.
Also remember that I have a tendency to make things look small because I am 7′ 2″. And incredibly awesome.
One (or both) of those statements is true.
Firstly, My vote is for In 60 Seconds.
Secondly, Bang! Heroes doesn’t do cowboys justice. Cowboys are awesome. Even more awesome than ninjas. That’s right, I said it!
Lastly, I’m hungry for burgers.
Ocarina of Time for Wii {seesmic_video:{“url_thumbnail”:{“value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/JPpd5oMe22_th1.jpg”}”title”:{“value”:”Ocarina of Time for Wii ”}”videoUri”:{“value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/NZWtZwEkAc”}}}
It would not surprise me. They remade the game for gamecube.
A lot of people didn’t like the wii controls. I actually didn’t mind them so much. I just beat the game myself and found the control scheme odd, but not hard to get used to. The most frustrating thing is I still wanted to hit ‘A’ to draw my sword. Over and over again.
I don’t have time to try these games right now, so just a small note.
Bang! Heroes is actually sort of a side-game of Bang! Howdy. Have a look: http://www.banghowdy.com/
So yeah.
Cool! I’m not the biggest strategy guy, but I’ll check it out!
There’s a couple games for the MSX computer I’d really like to see remade: “La Abadia del Crimen” and “The Maze of Galious”.
“La Abadia del Crimen” is a phenomenal adaptation of Umberto Eco’s “The Name of the Rose” (or its film adaptation) by Opera Soft, designed and programmed by the late Paco Menendez. It features a huge abbey for your character to explore, gorgeous isometric graphics, devious riddles to solve and, of course, an excruciating difficulty! And everything within the confines of 64 meager kilobytes(jacker?)!
“The Maze of Galious” is a platformer-exploration game in the vein of Castlevania, although much less linear. You must free Castle Greek from the clutches of the evil priest Galious, and save your yet unborn son, Pampas (!). You can freely explore the castle from the get-go as you collect a ton of items and weapons, and open the gates to 10 other worlds, even though to access some of their parts you may need to find some special items first. You play as Popolon and Aphrodite, two characters with different abilities whom you may exchange at any given moment. This is probably my most beloved game. Ever. And as much as I’d like to see it remade/upgraded, to think about how it could be bastardized scares the heck out of me… So, I guess I’d rather do it myself! :D
A friend of mine watched this episode with me and cracked me up when she said “I’d like to see Oblivion remade, but this time they can do a decent job!” She is a definite Morrowind fan, through and through.
Personally? I’ve got to say I’m with Taiar on this one: FFVI is perhaps my all time favourite game, largely because of the epic number of cheesy/dramatic moments involved. Sure, the musical artistry of Nobuo Uematsu did it justice then, but how cool would the Opera Scene and Celes’s aria be with pixel shading and a full cinematic orchestra? I think I would cry harder then at any death scene involving a pink flower girl!
Loved the episode and Mr. Carboni, that scene with the burger was indecent and salacious: I loved every second of it!
why has my itunes downloaded 2 instances of this episode? with different descriptions and a 13 second time difference?
what witchery have you done!?
Mistake on our part, ignore that other one.
For a old game that would like to see remade. I remember many fun nights with a old roommate playing Road Rash. I think a updated one with online game play would be the cat’s meow.
It’s a racing game with fighting elements. Unless I’m mistaken there isn’t anything out there like that right now.
Hey guys, so for a remake I’d like to see:
Streets of Rage (streets of rage 2 really)
Earthworm Jim
And I think they should remake Super Mario Land I and II ( the game-boy ones) for the NDS in the same style as the psudo-3d one they did recently.
Super Mario Land 2 for the gameboy was the best one I every played.
I’m guessing you never played New Super Mario Bros for the NDS. It wasn’t a remake. It was an entirely new game. It didn’t re-use old levels or anything. In other worlds remaking Super Mario Land like this would have no disguising characteristics to link it to Super Mario Land. Sorry.
Now if you want Super Mario Land like levels for New Super Mario Bros, I can support you. I think they should be cranking out new levels for that game based on ALL the old Super Mario Bros.
Aside from voting for In 60 Seconds, I’d like to see a proper remake of Carrier Command. While there is a fan remake in development ( http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/mod/journal/journal.asp?jn=472138 ) it’s slow in progress and, more importantly, there’s nothing playable from a project years in development. A commercial multiplayer remake would be great!
Retro remake?
I’d love to play the remade version of Star Wars Rebellion. Star Wars Empire At War hasn’t got the same galactic war atmosphere.
But anyway, the GAME that really needs remaking is X-COM: UFO DEFENCE
The so-called UFO: Aftermath and later released UFO-based games were totally crap. X-COM is my most favourite retro game ever.
The Sonic series has been consistently disappointing since the move to 3D… I think to get back on track they should do some snazzy remake, or maybe just make a “new retro” game in the vein of New Super Mario Bros.
Did you ever play the Sonic Rush games? I know they’re not full-on, new hardware retro remakes, but I think they’re the best Sonic games to come out in the last 10 years (that’s right, I’m counting Adventure).
Smash TV needs to be remade with online…
Wasn’t that geometry wars?
Man, I’d love to see a new Smash TV. I was obsessed with that game.
BIG MONEY!
BIG PRIZES!
IIIII LOVE IT!
The voting form is kinda broken for me. The buttons are all grayed out. No vote for me.
Actually, I got it to work, but I had to switch over to Internet explorer to do it. Please don’t make me do that again. I like my firefox.
I’d like to see Police Quest remade. Being a detective/policeman in an GTA-like city.
Remake Uniracers, please! {seesmic_video:{“url_thumbnail”:{“value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/7Hq78jrpHx_th1.jpg”}”title”:{“value”:”Remake Uniracers, please! ”}”videoUri”:{“value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/vGjYy1NuWw”}}}
Winner for best video comment!
And a uniracers remake would be way cool.
hahaha, great show. love the ending. XD
To answer this week’s question… I didn’t even have to think about this one. There was a game I played on the NES years back when I was but a wee nooblet called “Journey to Siluis.” It was unforgivingly difficult in the later stages, but it was a great game. side-scrolling shooter, multiple weapons with ammo pick ups…think a sort of Mega Man offshoot. The music was amazing for its time, and even still I’ll load up the rom and play it, and swear at it for being so bloody difficult at times….but I digress, this would be my game of choice for remakes.
Great show Anthony and John. Keep up the good work and I’ll keep spreading your website around like a virus. But it’s a sweet virus, filled with crazy characters and Cheeseburger porn!
Loved the contra comment from last week {^_^}
Also picked up IWBTG really good fun, one of my buddies lost his temper with it in like 5 minutes.
flicking through the selections theres a few worthwhile titles but remakes should be really oldskoool, I gotta say i love street fighter HD remix, upgraded facelift for high def = win.
Anyways theres one game i played in the arcades a long long time ago then found it on the snes and still play it occassionally on emulators, Bang heroes reminded me of it a little.
Sunset Riders
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63vq4nI5meY
the only game ever to feature a cowboy called Steve and a mexican wearing a bright pink poncho.
man i wasted so much change on this game in the arcades.
Riders in the sky gets a nod again! It got mentioned here a while back, and it deserves it. man, i love that game. Never beat it tho. I should get mame running and blow through virtual quarters until I see the end.
Did I say riders in the sky? What an idiot I am! I meant sunset riders. Here, in apology check this out:
http://www.youtubedoubler.com/?video1=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D63vq4nI5meY&video2=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D44I5Za6COGw
For extra points try to manage the pauses so that you can synchronize them and see the differences.
hah just skimmed through them both, thesecond one has better scenes with more details but the first is slower. Cool tool didnt know you could hit two vids side by side like that.
loved the quotes from that game so much, total cornball cheese-em-up lines
Bury me with my money!
You in heap big trouble!
We’re gonna blow you away!
or my personal favourite when rescuing the girl from the bar:
girl gets tossed out of the door.
You: You alright ma’am?
Lady: Oh! those terrible men! please help!
You: It’s ok Ma’am, don’t worry about it.
so awesome.
Boogerman {seesmic_video:{“url_thumbnail”:{“value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/8SgBKwYm1d_th1.jpg”}”title”:{“value”:”Boogerman ”}”videoUri”:{“value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/sTiC9TNfFT”}}}
OMG I remember boogerman! That would be a good one.
One of my most favorite genesis games needs to be remade, but dear god keep it out of the hands of closely related Sonic Team. It is none other than Ristar, the head-bashing shooting star who fights corrupt governments with violence. Beautiful graphics and amazing audio. The boss fights are delicious
