This episode suffers from a severe case of AWESOME OVERLOAD!
My vote, of course, is going to have to go to the pitbull because my sister owns a chihuahua…and it’s pure EVIL. Plus, it’s fat and looks like a sausage.
What game made me hardcore? While Wolfenstein ate up a lot of my time, I still play Doom to this day. The game just never gets old.
Great episode! I wonder what game made me into a hard core gamer, I’m pretty much sure it is the same one that I spent most of my time with – Sonic the hedgehog… or…wait may be it is my first PC game – BLOOD :)
Yay
New episode, I love this show.
I’m commenting before Joe has.
Joe your really cool,
Anthony your the best,
Camera guy your really cool.
Sorry for spamming, I’m just really happy.
Hay Joe,
have you made a indie game before?
I’ve made several games, most of them are pretty primitive, but I did make one that got some coverage. It was called Alleytris and you can get it here:
http://www.cymonsgames.com/alleytris
I am also working on another project called ASCIIpOrtal which if it turns out being half as cool as it is in my head will be pretty big. And after that I’m gonna start some graphics apps. So check out alleytris and tell me what you think.
WOOO! Logitech webcam contest! You guys rock.
The problem is clearly I don’t need to win, tho my webcam could stand an upgrade. I’ll play because the game is great, but don’t count me in the contest. Not that I’d have a chance against the finger twitching masters that are out there.
And, no, Star Control 2 isn’t the answer to everything. Star Control is the answer! The 2, just sometimes.
For instance, Star Control is what turned me into the gamer I am. Carried it with me on a 3.5″ floppy and played the heck out of it on the school labs. Thing is it didn’t turn me into a hardcore gamer. I’m not really a hardcore gamer. I consider a hardcore gamer someone who spends a certain amount of money on games all the time, and I just don’t. I’m a freebie gamer. I’m a cheep-arse gamer. And, yes, Star Control made me that because I got it for free. Probably ripped off, but I was a kid, so I didn’t know any better.
I’m just not feeling like a video comment today.
I don’t think it’s the amount of money you spend at all. I think it’s how much time you spend playing, thinking, and talking about games. And it’s certainly not the price of the game that makes it hardcore. We’ve covered some seriously hardcore stuff right here on Rapid Fire.
I guess what I’m trying to say is: there, there, Joe. WE think you’re hardcore.

Andrew’s game (from Orem, Utah! Howdy, neighbor) was solDat not solBat as you have it titled in the show.
Good job with the editing there, Jon. What? Have too much feedback to sort through that you couldn’t catch a typo?
Ok, so sue me I spelled it wrong. It was spelled in the voicemail to me with a “B” so I assumed that was right. I’m not fixing it, I’m too tired :) Lot of work on this one so I don’t always prioritize double checking that stuff that much. However I am greatly appreciating everyone who leaves voicemails to spell their names and locations for me, it’s a huge help!
Jon’s spelling has become a hilarious running gag between the two of us.
And if Andrew’s watching, I’m sure what he meant to say was “I’m not fixing it RIGHT NOW.” ;)
In all seriousness, great work on this one, Jon. If you guys knew how down to the wire we got this week, it’d blow your tiny human minds. Rivera’s a superhero.
Dude,
the game that got me started was Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death *U*dder..
udder Awesomeness!
Jon,
Great job editing it.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks dude and thanks for leaving a comment this week.
I disagree. The answer to everything is most definitely Star Control 2, although Star Control “1″ is usually answer “B”.

OH ITS ON!! ITS SO FREKIN’ ON :) finally i’m gonna win the blasted webcam so i can make some of those video comments you like so much :P
Watch out, dude. We’ve got some very hardcore competitors taking part. You’re gonna have to bring your A Game.
Final Mission (NES) made me hardcore, Mortal Kombat Ultimate made me hardercore, Linley Henzell’s shmups made me hardestcore.
Question about Gamerdrome (its Contact page returns an error page when I click “Send Message”):
The first post in Announcement says that I can upload any game-related video, but About page tells me that I should upload videos of games that were featured on the show. Which is correct?
Whoops! Sorry about the confusion. I fixed the ‘about’ page: ALL game-related videos are fine.
Thanks for letting me know about the “send message” error. I’ll report it along!
The game is called Soldat, with a D, not a B.
It’s german for soldier, makes more sense right?
Jon did a great job. Stop complaining about one little spelling mistake.
Thanks! Someone pointed it out earlier. We’ll get it fixed ASAP.
Ivory Springs looks very promising. The others definitely worth a try, too.
Feedback tiem!
There were actually two games that turned me into a hardcore gamer originally. The first one would be Castlevania 2 for the NES (Yeah, the horrible one), back when I was very, very litle. I didn’t understand English back than, and it actually encouraged me to pick up a dictionary and try to understand what in the hells I was supposed to do. I still failed.
The second one came later: Doom 2. No level was considered complete until I found 100% secrets. Yeah. Hunting for 100% completion is fun!
WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT TO HAVE A CURSE.
I have a really strange love for Castlevania II, Zelda II, and Super Mario Bros. 2. They’re such departures from the rest of their respective series, but for a long time they were my favorites.
I think is Contra for the NES, or maybe Chrono Trigger for the SNES, the first RPG i ever played and completed :3
Man, Contra started so many fist-fights between me and my friends when I was younger.
“Put the controller down, you’re dead. Put it down. Don’t touch it. THAT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT, YOU DID IT ON PURPOSE. THAT WAS MY LAST GUY!”
I think is Contra for the NES, or maybe Chrono Triggerfor the SNES, the first RPG i ever played and completed :3
Oh man oh man oh man, I can’t wait to play these games. Awesome episode, I’m glad we’ve got that contest up and running (finally)! Ok, catch y’all later.
Well, I’d have to say it’s Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Most people shun the Gamecube because lots of people tell other people that it’s bad. It’s really an awesome console. But seriously, the only downside to this game was the long sea travel. The rest was atmospheric, accessible, pick-up-and-play adventure game with deep characters, diverse environments, and like a bakajillion sidequests. And just so you know, I completed them all.
It’s official, this game made me a gamer.
No shame in loving Wind Waker, man. It’s absolutely my favorite Zelda game of all time.
Wind Waker is definitely my favorite console Zelda to date. The honor of favorite Zelda, though, has got to go to Link’s Awakening. I don’t think any videogame ever has captured my imagination quite like the first portable Zelda game did. I brought that clunky grey box with me everywhere I went, all for that one adventure (and later Picross, Kirby and Donkey Kong).
Well, a few days ago, I did get The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time on Virtual Console. It’s quite good. Sure the first dungeon was really lame, but after you get past that small tidbit (Which doesn’t take long.) you are invited into a world of possibilities. Selling masks, talking to Gorons, riding Epona around, and swimming in Zora’s River. Now I officially know I’m not biased to Wind Waker (Which isn’t a bad thing.) because Ocarina of Time nearly beat it on my AWESOME VIDEOGAME LIST OF AWESOME. If the Ocarina of Time were to be remastered, it would be awesome. This doesn’t affect my decision that The Wind Waker made me a hardcore gamer, though.
Anthony you did creep me out in this episode and the end that was just painful to watch. I’m scared now.
Please add “Highscore Attack” as a category in The Gamerdrome. Because I do them a lot.
Also, Fliggo uploader hangs up often for me. I have no problems uploading videos to YouTube, but on Fliggo it took 3 tries to upload a 100 MB video, and I’m still trying to upload a 250 MB video. There’s nothing you can do about it, but now at least you know.
Yeah, the uploader’s been a little crazy today (of all the days to start a new service). I find using the old-style uploader is working better for me than the flash one.
High Score Attack is a great idea! I’ll add it!
Chrono Trigger {seesmic_video:{“url_thumbnail”:{“value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/HbvDnoGEcK_th1.jpg”}”title”:{“value”:”Chrono Trigger ”}”videoUri”:{“value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/p7QC2m9EZw”}}}
It’s a lengthy comment but if you enjoyed Chrono Trigger nearly as much as I did I’m sure you’ll agree.

I’m really excited that this is getting some publicity for Soldat. That’s one of the first free indies I ever played and I still love to rip it up on the servers.
Oh Joe I love ya man! No worries ;) I’m extatic when I can go through a week without a typo in the show and somehow I always let one slip by. I’m sure everyone knows I was not an English major in school.
Anyway, thanks for the props. Putting this whole show together every week is quite a feat. Sometimes I wonder how the two of us pull it off.
It’s spelled ‘ECSTATIC.’
Damn it.
Disregard the second part of my previous comment. Fliggo continues uploading video even after it stops updating the status bar.
so what software do you guys use to record game footage??
Depends on the situation:
-For Mac games (and also anything in a browser), we use ScreenFlow on OS X.
-For most Windows Games, we use FRAPS.
-When FRAPS is unable to capture a Windows game, we use Camtasia Studio.
-For console games, we run the AV cables from the console to a signal amp/splitter and directly into Jon’s DVX100A, which is the camera we use to shoot the show. We’re switching to a straight-to-digital solution for console stuff in a couple weeks- we’re experimenting with different hardware now.
The game that made me hardcore? Probably playing Spawn or Power Stone on the Dreamcast. Many hours were spent playing those and I never even owned a Dreamcast of my own.

Darn kids got me saying “Ivy.”
Now that I’ve beat the game I really like it too. I especially love how it ends. Classic. Almost a cliff hanger.
Na, I’m still voting for RepliCat. I hate time travel in stories, but I love time travel in game play mechanics.
I’ll tell you what I’m not voting for. I hate games that rank your score with others online. So frustrating.
I’ am kind of a younger gamer, still working my way through highschool. I would have to say Rogue Squadron for the N64 made me the gamer I am today. I remember going in and buying that game because it was my very first game every, and I have to say it was an awsome choice of a game and an awsome game system.
Nice choice sir! Rogue Squadron was great! Still own it as a matter of fact. One of the few really good star wars games.

Metal Gear Solid is a solid example of how interactive video games can be.
Right on Peter! Metal Gear Solid was a monumental game for its time. If I recall correctly, it was one of the first games to incorporate dual shock technology. Everything about that game was revolutionary and certainly hardcore. I remember being in high school when it came out and all my friends were going nuts over hiding in the box.
Great choice!

Doought. Double posted. Please to delete.
C/C++. Straight.
I provide all the source code for my games on my site, too.
Sorry it took me so long to respond. You’re probably not even going to read this. Problem is when I saw this I was at work and for some reason there I can’t do a comment. i think it’s likely they blocked that somehow.
Anthony you live in Brooklyn ha ha ha ha that place sucks. I know it’s a joke so where do you really live?
Sorry Brooklyn is a great place.
guess ill give camtasia studio a try then, i’m not really a fraps kind of guy :P
Anthony is AWESOME!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m3AXJZM7u4
Those audio sync problems that you’re experiencing must be codec/container dependent. All the videos that I’ve uploaded were in AVI container compressed with lossless TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (Camtasia default), and the audio syncs perfectly.
That was my first thought, too. I’m guessing Jon used h.264 in a quicktime wrapper, so I’m also assuming everyone who got similar sync issues is using something similar.
A temporary solution would be to tell everyone not to use those settings, but in the long-term, its our job to make sure EVERY common codec works with the site. We’ll get it ironed out.

Awe shucks! Those video’s are CRAZY OLD!! I need to put new stuff there but YouTube loves to remove them because of copyrighted music. Thanks for the props Sebastian.
More Gamerdrome bugs:
I didn’t receive any “end of processing” e-mail notifications that were promised in the end of each upload, but at least I receive comment notifications.

The Dizzy games are so good! The Spectrum never really caught on over here in the US. It’s a shame, because there were a ton of great games for it. I’ve gotten into it a little bit through emulation.

You know, I’m probably showing my age here, but the game that made the gamer I am today is most definitely “The Tube” on the ZX Spectrum (or Timex 3903843984384398 to you US chaps). That was like three games in one, a vertical shooter, a horizontal shooter, and a 3D space shooter, with some of the most kickass music you have ever heard (by David Whittaker no less).
I dare anyone to give that game five minutes, and not be playing it several hours later.
I’d say the game that turned me into the “hardcore gamer I am today” (hah) would be Jazz Jackrabbit 2. The level editor was pretty neat and really inspired me. All the user-created levels really allowed tons of replay value, and levels way more difficult than the main game.
The game that pulled me into the world of gaming and never allowed me to look back…. The original Contra for the NES. I was 5 years old. My father came home one evening with a brand spankin’ new NES system, pristine in its box. I recall seeing an aura surrounding the box, and hearing angels sing. But that could’ve just been ’cause it was past my bed time and I was super tired, haha. Either way, I saw and heard it! It was there!
The first game we got was a little ditty known as Contra. It was lent to us by my uncle, an avid gamer since the days of Pong. I had an Atari which I would often play, but the NES just blew it out of the water with Nukes. We popped the game in, I started it up and played for as long as my little eyes could stay open.
I introduced my friend to it, and we would sit every single day, side by side, playing Contra Co-op. We learned of the capability to steal lives from the other player if we expended all of ours, and quickly developed a small rule where we would ask if the other needed help, since lives were so precious in that game. Hour after hour, day after day we played that game until sunset, and it was never the same since.
Oh, the joys of my first addictive gaming experience…. Then I got Mario Bros. 3…… oh yeah. then it became official. from there the games started rolling in and haven’t stopped. My name is Merik, and I’m a gameaholic. :)
Contra was/is a sweet game {seesmic_video:{“url_thumbnail”:{“value”:”http://t.seesmic.com/thumbnail/UETBsq8e4u_th1.jpg”}”title”:{“value”:”Contra was/is a sweet game ”}”videoUri”:{“value”:”http://www.seesmic.com/video/ohnz8nijkt”}}}
The game that made me the “hard-core” gamer I am today is probably Half-Life1.
It’s actually one of the first games I’ve ever played, and I still like it till this day!
Half-Life was a frickin’ Sweet game. I actually played Counter Strike first, and later found out that Half-Life was its origin so I tried that and loved it. It was a great game for its time, and Half-Life 2 (as well as the episodes) are all really well done. Great stuff indeed. :)
Good stuff. Contra has been a long lasting game. Oddly enough, Contra and Super C (the sequel to Contra) were the only games of the name that I ever really go into. I played a bit of the genesis game where you can play 4 different characters (one of which is a little robot and another is a wolf-man) and I wasn’t so thrilled with it. Since then I’ve been warry of any others in fear they followed the same sort of path. I’ll have to try out the DS game and see what it’s all about. :D
My favourite Free Indie of the Week is Ivory Springs. I really like Ivory Springs is because it was a solid platformer with lots of cool bosses. I didn’t like Pixel Ranger or RepliCat because they were both too simple. Not that I’m not all for the “Simple Idea” genre, but these were almost the same level each time.
I voted for pixel ranger because it’s the best game I ever played in my web browser. And because I’m number 19 of the high scores of the world!!!

ZOMG! Our comments went to 2 pages! I can now die happy.
I wouldn’t say there was a game that made me a hardcore gamer. I’d say that I’ve always been one even if I didn’t know it, and that the question is what game made me realize it.
I guess I’ve known ever since I loaded up Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest in NESticle so many years ago that I would be doing this for the rest of my life. It wasn’t the first game I emulated. That would probably be Blaster Master or one of the Super Mario Bros games. That’s not what’s important. Discovering the joys of old things I might remember or that I might have missed the first time, those are wonderful things but ultimately irrelevant.
What is important is that somewhere along the line videogames (and if you are the sort who are offended that I write that as one phrase, that’s good. It’s good to care about things. It’s part of what makes us all human. There will be people who will tell you that caring about little things like how I write videogames is horrible and trivial. But Caring about little things never stops any of us from caring about big things. I’d say it’s quite the opposite. It encourages a philosophy of care that has fallen away from the Anonymous crowd who screams in derision of anything they perceive as “serious business” and will not stop seething with rage for anything they consider “emo” as though feelings were the greatest poison there is. So let them sneer and push all of their emotions deeper down bottling them up until they have gone rancid and turn into a sour cancer within their hearts. You and I might be able to shed a tear for them that they would refuse to shed themselves. We are people who can care) form a reference point and offer a frame that helps me keep the world in perspective.
I know that after washing out of school I was selling Korean BBQ out of the front window of my kitchen, and that despite not having enough money for any furniture that I could not scrounge on heavy trash day. During this period in my life I was very much into anime and I know that back then I only knew the Japanese term for heavy trash and not the American term, and that none of my friends knew the English term either. Now, years later I am unable to recal the Japanese term (and would appreciate it if someone were to let me know in the comments section) but I do remember that in the days when I was waiting for the people to show up and get their thin strips of grilled beef, wrapped in a tortilla with fresh chopped pears, apples, sesame seeds and a clove or two of roasted garlic I would sit on the floor of my kitchen (no furniture, remember) and pass the hours with Donkey Kong Country 2. I never did find all of those DK coins.
It wasn’/t until years later that I found out about that one coin hidden in the bonus level as I was reading David Sirlin’s website. I haven’t gone back to it either. It just seems like it would be cheating. Not in the sense that using FAQs is cheating. No, it would be cheating in a much more important sense in that Donkey Kong Country 2 was part of my life as the sort of person who would constantly nom on the meat products. Now, these years later when I won’t buy meat (or accept meat other people have bought for me, though I am ok with taking leftovers from work or eating anything that’s been discarded, hooray freeganism) Donkey Kong Country 2 is a part of the past. It is a game of bananas but in my heart it will also be a game of meat in a way that even Cooking Mama won’t be despite how it obviously is a game filled with meat.
It’s funny what hasn’t changed. Here I am in my room, lying on the floor staring at an LCD monitor which sits on the floor just like me because once again I have no furniture. Only this time it’s a voluntary decision. I’ve been refusing furniture (which means no bed either) out of habit or something else, but still I refuse furniture, not unlike refusing the Donkey Kong Country games.
to paraphrase the bible
When I was Donkey Kong Country, I spake as Donkey Kong Country, I understood as Donkey Kong Country, I thought as Donkey Kong Country: but when I became The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, I put away Donkey Kongish things.
Maybe I really should buy a chair.
Wow. Heck of a story there.
fck this I say we go for three pages right now :D:D:D
I’m not happy with the “official” Bytejacker discussion being on Facebook. I’d love to see an official Bytejacker board on TIGForums.
Yeah, except that one ones discussing stuff there, so what’s the point. You’ll end up with a sad empty, lonely forum, like mine.
One ones? Can’t parse.
Wow, that should have been “no one is discussing stuff there.”
EDIT: Hey, that’s neat, I was able to post at work.
I already voted for Ivory Springs, but man, I also gotta say this: the last boss.. best boss battle I had in months.
You got to use the wrench, it was teamworkish, the mechanic was easy to figure out, and like any great battle, it was just annoying enough to get you to try again, but not enough to make you quit-delete.
Too bad it’s not to be continued.
Great job, Konjak.
Cymon,

pixel ranger looks suspiciously similar to this:

oh also, edge.
Oh, it’s clearly the same game. So much so that I’m inclined to think it’s the same guys who just upgraded it for Facebook.
Somehow, I almost like this version better. I can’t quite say why, tho.
Dude it’s like the EXACT same game. It does have a different feel to it that I think I actually might prefer too. It’s a smaller playing field though, so the guys are easier to hit.
… and no enemies coming at you from below.
Actually, it’s a lot slower this one. Takes a while to beat levels, etc. The new one is better, I guess.
