There is a magical place out there, friends. A place where Game Boys frolic alongside guitars, and NES decks and drum kits gambol about in perfect, kickass harmony. It’s called Blip Festival, and it is the center of the chiptune universe. We have been there, we have seen it, we have returned alive, and we are ready to report on the wonders we have seen.
Blip Festival, Part 1
We talk to Albino Ghost Monkey, Little-Scale, Je Deviens DJ en Trois Jours, Fighter X, and Failotron about how they got started in chiptunes and what tools they use to make their music and check out performances by Hally and Albino Ghost Monkey.

Test your knowledge: What’s Joe going to answer for this week’s feedback question?

Fastforward to the 4:00 mark to rock out, and watch my stupid face… what was I doing?
I am mostly sitting at the beach and sipping a Mai Tai.
Nah, there’s a lot of work that goes into a special episode like this, and none of it follows regular format, so we really have to figure it out as we go along. Shooting in advance helps us get in alignment with other special events – if we hadn’t scheduled this with Revision 3, we would’ve gone up against either the launch of a new show, a special Tekzilla, or CES – all of which would’ve added up to a lot fewer people seeing it. Scheduling it for this week means that we’re the big event on Rev3 for the week of the 21st, which hopefully will mean some new people will find their way here.
Re: interaction – yeah, you lose me making fun of you, but hey, you gain some pretty amazing stuff you’re not going to see anywhere.
Besides, I will ALWAYS be there to make fun of you, if you open your heart.

I really was critical. I’m sorry. Shocking confession follows.

Yeah, I also felt the 4 week difference. Kind of sucked considering all the weird shit that went on last week with the whole “Swingtime” lip synching and puppy-murdering and whatnot. After watching the episode, I just felt like the outsider to an inside joke. But if you guys are vacationing, by all means, do it. You guys really do deserve it.
And thanks, Joe. :D I’m planning on sticking around for a while. Wait, whaaaaa-? Only the 2nd female video commenter ever? You know, I think I remember the first one. She was a goth or something. Just nobody expect me to be some kind of female representative. The only thing somewhat girly about me is that I say “like” every other word, and that’s just a regional thing.
Eh, I’ll just leave video comments when I do the review of the games maybe tomorrow or whenever. Meanwhile, I’ll be rekindling my love with Metal Slug and Super Mario RPG. <3
Oh, speaking of girls. The godaddy.com ad irritates me every time. EVERY TIME. Damn mid-life-crisis cubicle workers. xD
I don’t expect you to represent the y-chromosome deficient, just bring a little variety to the show. By virtue of being a girl you’re guaranteed to have a different perspective than me. I’d say the same for those from across the sea, but Ian and I tend to overlap so much I’m not so sure about that any more.
Oh, and those godaddy adverts, yeah I’m with you on that. I’m actually different than most guys in that I don’t go “I’m against the objectivity of wome…. ooh, Janna Pinket Smith nip slip.” I’m actually opposed to the objectivity of women. Unless it’s my wife. And then it’s only in good fun for a laugh.
Oh yeah:

I don’t know how stupid this looks because I haven’t watched it, but once I heard 80s music I couldn’t resist. It’s no swing time, but it’s something better in my opinion.

Favorite classic game chiptune, though it doesn’t feel all that “classic” because it was Super Nintendo (anything after Mega Drive just feels like cheating)

Bongos! YES! Now if they had been Gamecube bongo controllers that would have been bonus points, but just for the virtue of being bongos in a rock video you’re already in the stratosphere point wise.
Tom, I knew what you were playing two notes in.
Jon, you can still use the footage, even if the song was wrong, right?
gamecube bongos!! that woould be ace, at some point the bytejacker community will begin to rival “press play on tape”

This is probably the stupidest I’ve allowed myself to look in these videos in a couple months…
HOLE-LEE CRAP! This video is going to be full of so much epic win.
What we need now is someone who manages to work a cute cat into it. If that were to happen when this thing goes live a gravitational center will form around it, draw epic win from the rest of the Internets, and for no less than 24 hours everything else on the internet will seem inexplicably dull. Inexplicable to all but those of us here at the center, watching it happen. Forwarded e-mails will make no sense. Memes will cease to be repeated. The internet will be a bleak landscape until the power of this thing wears off.
We need to make a T-Shirt.
I’ll try to see if I can get my girlfriend to chime in with her cat. I’m trying to get her in on Bytejacker. We may comment together soon.
this is without a doubt the mother of all episodes! BELIEVE IT! We have awesome 8-bit music, we have super funny stuff from anthony and that gajin games guy who seems to be also rather funny, we have girl video comments, we have batman…..this is just the best episode…but wait where is john??…waa…still playing WoW john, get your head out of your ass man! peace :D
Jon was totally there, drinking beers and eating pot pies with the rest of us.
They had some EPIC pot pies there, dudes. And tiny hamburgers. They called them “blip burgers.” They came in a chinese take-out carton. It was rad.
So is pot pie an american term for a hash cake or is it actual kind of pie? Enquiring Europeans want to know.
It’s basically a savory pie – you know, filled with meat or vegetables, as opposed to a dessert pie. They’re also sized for just one person.
I had such a superb time hanging with everyone there, especially all you Bytejacker guys (and the random Brooklyn subway bump in with Anthony). Being able to chit chat with Phil Fish, all the Gaijin Games guys, and reverb with Bit.Shifter was superb on top of the already awesome show.
On top of that I won the raffle ($2 for a modded gameboy and more!), met with my collaborative friend Disasterpeace, and even befriended Minusbaby (still blown away by his performance), as well as others concert goers.
To make things even better I was able to talk to numerous musicians and still am in for possibly making music videos for Minusbaby, Failotron, The J. Arthur Keenes Band, Shnabubula, Disasterpeace, and maybe more.
If anything check out my stuff:

Ah, I can’t believe I forgot about the Pokemon series. Blue was awesome, and so was silver, though not as epic.
But I’ll never forget the final battle music in Pokemon Blue
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jZvBZlDRSk
So crazy…
Oh my gosh, you are so right! That music brings it all back to me. Palms are sweaty, anticipation is running wild, the music has you frantic. So crazy. The epitome of epicness. Dude, those were the days. So much madness trying to beat Gary and the sweet joy when you beat Gary. I have to say, there was a lot of passion for this game.
I am such a Pokemon nerd.
I can’t remember all those days in elementary school where the just me and 3 kids playing on the old brick gameboy, all having the music up to the max so all the sound was meshed together. And I can’t name how many times Gary wooped me…. With all your half dead pokemon, and then hes got Alakazam, so crazy…
Whenever I hear that song it just gives me the chills, like I’m a kid again, mind going crazy, almost shaking.
Hahah I stopped playing silver, since any amount of pokemon over 250 is just a bit insane…
Yeah. I remember I got Gold and Silver so I could trade between my lime green gameboy color and original grey block gameboy. But it sucked because years later the silver pack I believe (my favorite of the two) had a battery problem that was reported to happen in many copies of the game. So devastating, but past the point at which I played. I already finished at that point. I’ve played like all the iterations. Diamond and Pearl can have all the pokemon. It’s insane.
Ohhh I was bummed recently, Cause I was listening to the soundtrack of silver, so I thought to dig up my old cartage, and it just wouldn’t start because of that internal battery was dead, and its just not the same on a computer… But yeah, I’ve tried Diamond, and it was pretty good! Just doesnt have that same feeling, for example, When Blue came out, you had 150 pokemon, and 3 of them were legendary (I guess 5 if you count mew and mewtwo). So you get this intense feeling when you go up against Zapdos, this one chance, awesome rare pokemon. Now in diamond theres like 20, alot of them you can try until you get, and their powers are like controlling time and space! Crazy kids and their new age pokemons.
Hahaha, true that. Oh man, what a bogus thing. That was crazy the whole internal battery issue. So many people suffered from it! Dude, you hit the nail on the head though. When it was new and there were so few pokemon, including legendary ones, there was so much more pressure and the pokemon felt so much more valued and epic. It’s so much easier to remember all their names and what they did too. So crazy. My favorite in the beginning had to have been Charizard, but later on it became Rayquaza because it was the only pokemon I raised to level 100 legitimately. I transfered it from Saphire to Diamond. A friend of mine and I got Diamond and Pearl the same weekend and kind of cheated to get all the starters. He’d start a new game get a starter and I’d trade him for it. We pretty much did this till we both had them all, and we traded legendaries to get their stats so we could get them on the global trade thingy. It’s so much more complicated now. Back when it was just Blue it was a simple intense pleasure, and it had the misingno cheat that I did all the time after I won. At least, I think I did it after I won. I hope I didn’t cheat before. There was so much less to do so it was fun to cheat after you won.
Hahahah the missing no. cheat. I remember in high school our teacher stayed after school so we could study why the missing no cheat existed. Best day of school ever… Blue and red were just a programmers nightmare…
But yeah, I didn’t know about that cheat till way after. Hah when I found out, it was too late for my version, all my pokemon in the hall of fame were all glitched… but man I loved blue.
I would say my top 2 games for the 8-bit music have to be megaman and pokemon, hands down.

Still need to play Bonkers in the Sewers properly, so I’ll add that later.
Also, for some reason my face freezes up a bit after the 2:00 mark.
When I think of it, I never really liked the Lunar Commander games, just that I remember playing it with my brother and he would always make fun that I could never get past the first level.
And I tried that sewers one… I had the same thing, just got to the start, went again but nothing happens…
Fun though

Really though, did I miss something? Was that really the “end” of the game? I just want to know before voting.

LOL to this video. And I also agree with the Megaman. Well, I haven’t played too many games with chiptunes, but they really were great in that game.
That’s good stuff.
Hahahahaha! Epic. Welcome back, dudes!

Really, could there be any doubt?
THAT IS THE CORRECT ANSWER.
(well, they’re all great answers, but this is the one I agree with. Love, love, LOVE, the music from Mega Man 2)
Megaman 2, Crashman’s stage: most epic music evah. Trust me, i justs ended with a megaman marathon from megaman 1 to 7.
Also, cave story counts as chiptunes? if so, then totally wins.
Cave story had some awesome tracks as well, But I don’t believe Megaman 2 was the best music, it had the best intro and the best Wily stage easily, but Megaman 4, every single stage was amazing music.
Megaman 9 had some really awesome music too.
LOVED the cave story soundtrack. Didn’t know if that counted as “classic”, but by now it should. There’s a great piano compilation on Youtube, so you might wanna check that out.

I’ve got a lot of favorites for chiptunes in a game: Silver Surfer, Capcom games, and any 8-bit game(including on Commodore 64 and PC-98) by Tim Follin; And the Touhou games on the PC-98 have some outstanding chiptune soundtracks that have been released on CD by the game(and sountrack’s) creator.
But my favorite Chiptunes in a game, since I am forced to pick, is the third Touhou game on PC-98 Phantasmogoria of Dim.Dream.

Hey, dudes – not sure what’s up with video comments, but we’re on it.
I was gonna go off on how much I hated Bonkers in the Sewers. How it failed to impress from that download page that had my pop-up blocker working overtime, the auto-hyperlinked “File” and the fact that the download link itself is hidden A FONT SIZE SMALLER in the corner. But, I figured if this game were good enough to be featured on Bytejacker it’ll be worth it. And then it wasn’t. In complete, unbeatable, and the one power-up worth purchasing you have the money for before you start? What kind of stupid… you don’t even have to play for that?
I don’t mind a game being released as a demo, but a demo featured on Bytejacker? That doesn’t even bring anything new to the table? I’m disappointed in you guys for featuring it. What? Do you have some contractual obligation to feature a game from the popenkast every few weeks? The go back and feature BooM. This game was not worth it.
The other two I liked alright., neither of them really jumped out and said “vote for me.” I liked little rocket alright. Relaxing guitar music and particle based gravity physics? What’s not to love? Managed to get all 18 star the first time I played and Laurence, if you just land on one of the many flagged planets you get refueled, so it’s not that difficult.
But in the end my vote went for Paradox Embraced because I appreciate how impressive making levels that fold in on themselves this way is, tho I don’t think they went quite far enough with it. There was one level where it looked like the level was upside down and I thought “Are they going to add the ability to flip the map on top of flipping between time zones? That’d be mindwarpingly awesome!” But they didn’t. What about changing something in the past having an effect on the future? Nope. And I agree that the storyline just kinda went thppt. I mean, why is he able to flip between time zones? Why do those treasures defeat the baddy at the end? I suppose little rocket didn’t do any better, tho little rocket didn’t need to, I guess, the was Paradox Embraced did, tho I don’t know why. Still, and it was close between this and little rocket, for the cartography aspect alone, my vote went to Paradox Embraced.
I would’ve enjoyed playing Bonkers in the Sewers in its finished version, but you really can’t put a demo up against completed games. That’s just unfair and kind of odd. I went into this thinking it was going to be a full game, and I’m kind of surprised you guys didn’t tell us otherwise.
