RADAR: Patchwork Heroes Review
Acquire, Action/Puzzle, PSP, $10
I’ve got this terrible weakness: tell me a game is silly and looks like cut paper and I’m there. I’ve wasted many a dollar and lots of time on some really adorable and really terrible games without much substance, so I was a little wary of Patchwork Heroes. Sure, it looked phenomenal visually, but would the gameplay be up to par? Luckily, this little action puzzler delivers.

TEXT COMMENT FIRST AGAIN. BIATCH.
Now thats just silly!
Hey guys, not that I’m complaining, but I’ve noticed that a lot of your music is from iimusic.net lately. There are other chiptune labels out there. If you want, I can list some that I know for you.
We try to use the widest variety of music possible. That said, we have standing deals with II and Pterodactyl Squad to use any of their music whenever we like, which makes it much easier to use their material.
Bands are always welcome to send along their music to us in the suggestion box or through direct email. We don’t require them to be chiptune artists, either – a little while ago we used music from Robot Science: http://robotscience.bandcamp.com/album/square
If there’s an artist you’d particularly like to hear on the show, send info along – we’d love to hear them!
Text comment assholery aside, great show. Bottom apartment guy was hilarious. xD Now we all have an insight into Anthony’s secret air-wanking, backyard-shitting lifestyle. Interesting stuff.
Also, last’s week’s “Free Indie Countdown” list hasn’t changed, so ya might want to fix that.
And I WILL get a video comment in on time this week. I WILL.
FIXED Thanks!
“air-wanking”!! As a british guy who, for reasons already explained, can’t see this video… i sincerely hope that was a typo!!
Nope, it’s quite literally air wanking. Anthony shakes his fist up and down in the air and then the bottom apartment guy who is sunbathing comments that he’s air jerking off basically…

Classic! I used to have it for the ps2, weeird game
Yeah? I’ve never played it, but after seeing screen shots I was really intrigued and could see myself playing it simply because it was so weird.
I have to say thought Anthony, you are one sick fuck. Shitting in the lawn with your dog?! Seriously? Do you guys sniff butts together too?
Wait, why would you even say something like that, man?
There’s too much to love about this episode. I’m really enjoying the sitcom aspects juxtaposed with reviews and feedback etc. It makes it all the funnier.
Thanks! We’re having a lot of fun mixing it up.

That’s a lotta Joe there. And I think my eyes are closed in every since one of those preview picts. Brilliant.
Spectrum Spelunker was quite the trippy game Joe. I won (or it said I did) but I couldn’t help but think I missed something back on that first island… or mote… or floaty thingy, whatever. One thing to note is that I usually either REALLY agree with you, or REALLY disagree. This was one of those rare cases that are more ambiguous, it was a cool game, with a cool mechanic. But it definitely would not have won my vote for FIRf. But I’m happy I played it, so thanks!
Actually, until I released Robot Wants Kitty and got all manner of unix geeks saying things, I’d never heard of Robot Finds Kitten! It’s just an amazing coincidence. Robot Wants Kitty was also made for a contest, Ludum Dare #16 (http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-16/?uid=11). In this case, the contest was just to make a game in 48 hours with the theme of Exploration. So that’s what you get! No homage intended, but it did seem to drum up some interest in some quarters as an advantage.
Robot Wants Puppy coming soon!
Well what do you know about that. Apparently robots looking for kittens is an idea that reverberates through the ages.

Dude, were you guys drinking Simpler Times? My goodness, you’re effing hipsters.
Simpler Times is the bomb, dude. You know it. I know it. Moltar know it. Zorak know it. Tansut know it. Brak know it. Lokar know it. And those other people know it, too.
It’s a surprisingly tasty beer in an astoundingly shitty aluminum can. I have never once opened one without tearing the can in a way that either obstructed liquid flow or had me worried about cutting myself while drinking. Goes fantastically with TJ’s Iced Tea Lemonade. I basically live off of Trader Joe’s is what I’m getting at here.
I saw my face on the internet! Does that mean I’m famous now? I better start working on my signature…
FIR: You guys were trying to make this one difficult weren’t you, those are three great games! You didn’t even lob us a semi-dud to easily rule out (sorry WindHawk… the truth hurts).
Feedback: Now you’re taking away all but one game!? Forever!!?? That is a hypothetical that’s almost too horrible to consider. But because I love you guys, I’ll give it a shot.
Well I have a lot of soul searching to do this week, but when I’m done (and I found a new mic, wow my sound sucked) you can expect one of these new fangled video-comment things.
Man, this week was good. Incredible video comments all around.
Alright, fishface, played it, beat it. Took me 7 minutes to complete it and got just over half the rings. Good game, good visuals, liked it a lot. Kinda surprised it was a download. Not that I mind, just saying is all. I preferred the blurry version over what I saw in the screen shots. I’m kinda perplexed by everyones apparent preference for blocky pixels. I have no such love apparently.
Good game, a contender, but still doesn’t change what I said I’d vote for above.

Choice being for “If you could only play one game for the rest of your life, what would it be?” Will have to be Mario Kart WII

After a good 2 hours of desktop dungeons, I decided that maybe I was a bit hasty with choosing this week…
The answer to this week’s question is obviously Halo.
Anthony, Your neighbor looks like Borat
? Am i right ?
So in a nutshell:
1st-Desktop Dungeons
2nd-Fish Face
3rd-Robot Wants Kitty
ALRIGHT, that was accidentally posted, so here’s the accompanying video.
And I didn’t post it on Monday night this time!

More like Final Jerktasy
Hm, apparently my video’s working for you then. For me, it just says “Video Unavailable.”
And I’ve got to beat Culex (apparently that’s the boss’s name). Well as soon as you enter that room to fight him, it was like you were thrown into a different game. Out of nowhere he just starts saying random shit about anti-matter, and I could think was “WTF?! I’m going to die.” I actually thought Jynx was damn near impossible as it was, but after I beat him I began considering trying Culex. Big mistake.
Culex huh? First time i beat him i kicked his ass. Though i had the super tooniki suit from doing 100 super jumps in a row. Also had the lazy shell, which i gave to bowser, and the weapon i gave to mario. So my defenses were off the chart.
And what game is that asshole from anyway? I’ve never seen him in any Final fantasy game. Played 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8…….didn’t beat it, 9……….didn’t beat it, 10, 12. So i take it he is either in 8 or 9?
what i thought was funny was after you did beat him it did the Final fantasy Victory Fanfare lol. That was one of the greatest moments in the entire game. But enough of the talk. I thought real hard, my previous video, yeah scratch that. Changed my answer. I’m going to be picking Kingdom hearts 2 for the only game i’d like to play. Will post a video ASAP.
Couldn’t be from either FF8 or 9 (8 came out in 1999, SMRPG came out in 1996) and a quick google search confirms my long held suspicion.
“Culex is meant to be a reference to the Final Fantasy series, a popular series of RPGs made by Squaresoft. Contrary to popular belief, he does not appear in any Final Fantasy game.”
Terrible terrible boss though, if I remember correctly I managed to beat him, only after constant guide look ups, and some liberal use of an emulators “save state” function. However my memory is fuzzy at best after 8 or so years, so I might just be making that all up.

Kingdom hearts 2, rechanging my answer from mario kart wii to kingdom hearts 2.
Reason being, sephiroth, one hard one of a bitch to beat with just the kingdom key.
Russelloni, you amuse me, man.
SEPHIROTH IS SUCH A DOUCHE! I mean, Kingdom hearts 1, hes like “Ok I got a long sword, so learn to dodge and heal and you can beat me” And in the second one its like “I’m GONNA JUST FUCKING JUGGLE YOU IN THE AIR TO DEATH CAUSE I’M SOME HUGE DOUCHE!”.
Fucking sephiroth…
You amuse me too Joe Larson.
-looks up and then down- Yeah i’m awesome…….and i’m late for work….priceless lol
Speaking of sephiroth, He was ten times easier in Kingdom hearts than in Kingdom hearts 2. You could heal easier, like everytime you were hit it filled your Blue MP bar. Now in Kingdom hearts 2 you can’t do that cause when you heal you have to wait till your MP bar completely recharges.
Though you know who else is a douche in the games. Xigbar and Xaldin. Those types of attacks that they unleash on you where you keep shooting up in the air and can’t even defend yourself. Xigbar is the worse with his guns, but can still kick his ass easily.
Oh, I’m glad you saw that. I always worry that those 11th hour video comments won’t get seen, but that one seems appropriate. Too good to pass up.
Video not available for me Russeloni. Well, the second vid anyways. I too, could not defeat Culex. Never got the Tanooki suit. But I did try to take culex on a number of times. Although, I don’t believe the character is from a final fantasy game. Or maybe I did beat him and don’t remember? Maybe that’s why that victory music is one of my favourites? I dunno. I’ll wiki it.

I’d have to check my old save file though. On a still working, Super NIntendo.

LOL….ok i didn’t have my fiance push the door open of my closet lol.
But still hilarious. I love it how people can make fun of me for the littlest things lol.
if i only had a mic i could be like, And now myself inpersonating Jon. Oh wait i can’t i’m single…..damn…..
Speaking of World of Warcraft, it is so popular because too many people are addicted to it. I myself don’t play it, one being i don’t have a computer which can hold the capacity of this game. Which is why i stopped playing Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne.
Though a game like that, I don’t know if anyone has ever played Frozen Throne, it can last forever. I just go to custom games and there is a shit load of made up games that involve a lot. Like Dragon Ball Z, final Fantasy, Super mario Bros.
Ones i like the best is the Dragon Ball Z Rampages and RPGs. A paladin playing as Goku, The beastlord plays broly, and i think it is the night elf demonhunter who plays Majin buu. Good stuff, Especially the fact that i can just Enter the command SS to go into the super saiyan stage, and SS2, SS3, SS4 and so forth.
That was genius. I’m sorry Russelloni, but you gotta hand it to Jon for delivering such a lulz-worthy impersonation. xD
Click to play this video.
I couldn’t resist.
Yeah, World of Warcraft is kind of my one addiction that I can never seem to kick. I play it for a few months, then cancel it, then start it back up again for a few months . . . . then cancel it. It’s a vicious cycle. Currently I’m cancelled since I work 6 days a week and no longer have the time to play.
Actually the other female in my life, my cat Sega opened the door. She loves running around on the linoleum floor and sliding into things. I tried recording this video 2 other times and she crashed into something both times.
I used to be love WoW, and I think if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m an unpaid intern and someone stole my account, I may still be playing. I know I don’t wanna play again, but when I see Mr.T in the commercials, I just zone out, next thing I know, I’m trying to start a new account.
Its like that movie Idle Hands… Cept alot more nerdier, and less killing.
That was your cat? Aww man I feel bad, thought it was your fiancé who was going for a thirteen hour shift playing final fantasy 13 from last week. You said 13 right? Ehh lol. Either way it was very funny.
I don’t know if you heard the TV on, my dad was on his recliner passed out. Either he was watching sanford and son or all in the family. So I kept looking over at the TV lmao
She’s actually over 20 hours in now. She’s off for the whole week so she’s determined to finish it. She’s still on disc 2 however since we have the 360 version.
How is it? worth the purchase or skip it?
She’s on hour 25 and she’s totally in love with it. She definitely says it’s a buy. The whole fighting system is very different this time around but it actually works well. It implements more strategy by making certain characters tanks and healers just like in WoW. Of course, I’m going by what I see only.
i see i see, so just by looking at the gameplay. Is it anything like they did in Final Fantasy X where it gives you a turn list of who attacks and when they are going to attack? Or is it more like Final Fantasy X-2 where the monsters just keep attacking no matter what happens even if you don’t pause the game they attack anyway?

I pity the fool who can’t beat culex, haha!
Sorry bout that, FIXED!
You crack me up dude, it’s all love.
oh i know, i’m cool with it, i’m not gonna go ape shit over it. But hey i’ve got a big sense of humor. hehe i said i pity the fool who can’t beat culex. Lol those world of warcraft commercials with Mr. T just crack me up.
Aw, don’t make me feel bad, Russ! xD We only kid. Just think of it as your signature video commenting style.
Hmph, i told ya i would find a way. AHA!

We shoot our episodes on Sundays usually, sometimes Monday if we’re in a pinch. I start the edit Sunday nights and usually finish late night Monday. Overall, an episode usually takes about 16-20 hours to shoot and edit and that doesn’t include the time in takes Anthony to play the games and review them.
Of course if you factor in pre-production, makeup, hair, wardrobe and Anthony’s personal on-set masseuse then we’re going into 60+ hours . . . . . . really it takes us 16-20 hrs.
@ Russelloni: Check your video quality while recording. If it’s on low, your not going to get a very good in sync video. Otherwise it may be your connection.
Hmm, I get not available yet. And just forgot what I was going to type…Great.
It is on medium, and plus i’m using a piece of crap labtop. When i should of used the Mac downstairs like in my second video comment.

Also, your game idea reminded me of both “Super Mario War” and “Indie Brawl”. Check them out.
They’re both in 2D and have been in development forever and still aren’t quite complete. Super Mario War is kinda finished, and it’s cool the way it allows so many characters, but it’s nowhere near what you’re talking about and Indie Brawl is even more ambitious and nowhere near done. Trust me, adding the 3rd dimension to this and making it free roaming will up the complexity and resultant development time exponentially. There’s this saying about biting and chewing that may apply to this situation.
Well joe, i appreciate the video comment. The problem with making it and having the idea is wanting to make it. I’m sure if i wanted to make this into a popular TV show i would have to start writing. I also mentioned you guys because well my mind isn’t at the same state as yours. What i mean by that is well i am 22, I don’t know how old Joe larson is, or Jon, or even Headphonic for that matter. The age of mind is different as we get older. As i learned in ethics a semester ago. So would i intend on not doing anything, no this is something i would actually want to work with.
But if it has already been done then what is the point, ya know? It just popped in my head one day, and i thought i’d ask for another Gamers opinion.
Also i forgot to mention. As for it being a video game, i’m not so sure, the capacity of this game is way beyond anything. I don’t have the knowledge, i don’t have the ability to even produce something like this. I attended on possibly making this a new Television show, similar to Megaman NT warrior and beyond that.
See my dad just came to me one day and said, hey maybe i should write a good book. I told him, even if i intended to, i don’t have an idea and possibly don’t have the time to make it.
When i mentioned you three, i’m not going to just say here is the idea, get to work. No no, but i understand, it is kinda like applying for a job is what your getting at. If i’ve actually made something then maybe something bigger than that can roll into place.
Joe your cool, i’m not upset, i’m not going to back down. I will look at gamemaker, see what develops.
btw am i even aloud to cuss on my video comments? Maybe i should of just posted links to them all?
I apologize though if these comments are inappropriate for this.
Dude, they cuss in the show. I think it’s fair. If they use you’re comment they’ll just edit it out.
Cuss away Russelloni, I got the bleep button!
Ohhh wow, joe i do not think they would put………all of that onto thursdays show, if they did…..then damn…..
AND WHERE IS HEADPHONIC! i want her to see those video comments. Especially the part where i made fun of her. MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Awwww, why was I the only one who was going to get made fun of? D: LOL but yes I completely ripped off Jon’s idea. xD Me and Joe’s excuse: “I couldn’t resist.” But really though, we love ya too. And keep on leaving video comments! You’re like the only person I’ve heard of who’s defeated Culex.
And I think I might’ve heard of the Brutal Mario thing somewhere sometime or something. But I’m not really sure. So I’m gonna have to check that out. TO YOUTUBE, AWAAAAY! Speaking of youtube, I’ll also have to see any videos of defeating Culex.

Dude! I got a newer Charizard card, not the classic one. But I got a Blastoise pretty early on. Pretty sick. I have sooooo many freaking cards. I’m bringing it back on campus. A bunch of my friends and I have started playing again with reckless abandon.

Ok, that’s that, and the sound is slightly better this week, not great great, but better. I’ll work on that some more this week. Also apparently I can’t sit still for 3 minutes. I blame my cats, and the fact I’m in a swivel chair. Damn swivel chairs!
What I like about desktop dungeon’s difficulty is that it wasn’t twitch difficulty, it was thinking difficulty. You’re weighing out every decision. Do I explore more and possibly lose the unexplored area that I’ll need for health and magic later or fight what’s here? Do I use magic in this fight or do I just use my fists? Which god do I worship. The thing I don’t like is when I get to a dead-end in the game. The realization that any move I make will end my game before I get to tackle the boss so I just hit retire. It’s a terrible feeling. Then again, I like that you can retire. That your guy can look around the dungeon and go “Welp, I’m done here” and back out.
I completely agree with almost all of your points. I didn’t get particularly frustrated during dead ends, although I can see how someone might. Half the time it felt like totally my fault (trying to farm too much XP on high levels before I was ready, exploring too much on full health etc.) The other half of the time it seemed completely unwinable, (certain bosses *cough* meatman *cough*) However in comparison to other roguelikes that had me pulling out my hair, I was only wasting a maximum of 10-15 minutes, and usually was able to find the unwinable levels within the first 5 minutes. So it could have been frustrating, but the frustration was dampened by my relative lack of time investment for each failure.

Feedback question. Extending the question further to its associated book question, if I had to choose one book for the rest of my life, it would NOT be The Fountainhead, or Atlas Shrugged. Ayn Rand was a lot of things, but she wasn’t really the best story teller. Although if I got to pick five or ten books… Atlas Shrugged might sneak in there…
What a good episode to stumble on to. This was really funny. And look at the freaking orgasm in the background.
Nice going, guys. And Carboni, NOBODY WILL EVER UNDERSTAND.

Hopefully a helpful strategy when you fight the terrifying Culex in Super mario RPG…….
i know a guy who is worse than this boss……SEPHIROTH
in Kingdom hearts 2.
You took it to the next level here man — best episode ever. And Joe just set you up with a hilarious spike with the video comment too — brilliant. “I can smell sound clips!”
