CONTINUITY, YES! Can’t wait to see the repercussions from that time you danced behind that dude in the park with your umbrella in episode 46!
I’m a little surprised that nobody said the penguin suit from NSMBWii and also that Sanjay Gupta came in last. LOVED that game except for how incredibly short it was.
Such a great episode. So many questions raise by this episode, like: Can Anthony actually modulate his voice down like that and sound all manly or was that a post editing trick? Will there be 24 more evil twins show up, one for each letter of the alphabet? Is this because Anthony was a part of some cloning project in the past? How in the heck did he get the upper hand in that fight?
More questions than answers? Very Lost-like.
And I loved the shrug Anthony gave when he won the fight.
Episode was chock-a-block. I felt like all the comments were getting cut short. I was really hoping me mentioning how much Dr. Sanjay looked like Barak Obama would make it in. Come on, was I the only one who thought that?
…
Probably so.
You fail to take into account that perhaps Anthony DIDN’T get the upper hand! Maybe he was killed and replaced. Mr. B’s a SNATCHER!
I like the speculation guys, nice thinking. Of course I don’t think I have the strength in me to help Anthony bury the whole alphabet. I promised this would be the last time I helped him bury a body. Each one is another life sentence.
@Joe – I don’t know why, but I was having issues with Final Cut this week and it wouldn’t let me scroll to the very end of your comment to get that info or else I would have included it. The gods love to frown on us in the 11th hour.
Don’t worry – all questions will be answered with a 2 1/2 hour special episode.
(spoiler: no they won’t)
There’s something a bit curious. I’ve noticed the past few weeks that the winner hasn’t had anyone commenting on it. Just an overwhelming landslide of silent voters. That doesn’t seem right. So I’ve gone back reviewing all episodes up to 87 and I don’t know if it goes further than that, but so far the first choice in the voting form has been #1, the second choice has been #2 and the third has been #3. Now, the numbers have all been different. Munikun remember was an absolutely singular 0%. But the placement has been pretty uniform for the past month.
Maybe this is just some wacky coincidental streak. I just checked and episode 87 is different, so maybe it is all chance. Still, strange.
Ugh oh, he’s close to breaking the code! Next he’ll figure out the secret subliminal messages hidden in the coded numerical sequence of the past 14 episodes. Crap!
I’ve noticed that too, and I’ve written them down, but the sequence doesn’t make sense? I mean, what is the significance of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42?
Those are all ages I was when I actually did something right.
But you’re not 42 yet. GASP! Will that be the age that you finally lose your virginity?
No… no. Too easy. Lemme try again.
But you’re not 42 yet. GASP! Will that be the age that you finally write a game?
Not as much a “ZING” but I can feel better about it.
My pick for most epic boss fight easily, EASILY goes to Bayonetta.

Okay, this is the most epic part of the boss battle, the beginning. About a minute left in they are matching each hit and you get this sense of camaraderie and honor in their fight to the death. It stirs this strange emotion with the music. It’s eerie and haunting, but amazing.

I know I’ve posted a lot today, but I felt it appropriate to restructure my response to say what I want to say better. Hope this is doesn’t bother anybody. One main thing was including a little summary of the opening sequence, which I feel is the most important part to this boss battle. It sets the emotion for the whole fight.
Jon, if you use any footage for this I suggest the first opening sequence. I posted a youtube link above. Crazy choreography that’s more interesting than just the fighting sequence.

Well, of course I remember you. You were never really that active in my memory, maybe more text comments than video. Maybe not.
A-train first showed up in episode 69, tho there he wasn’t really an actual character, so it was a surprise in episode 84 when he suddenly was his own character. And then he was dead. If I link to both of those episodes the comment will get marked for moderation, so I’ll just let you navigate to them yourself.
Dang, I wish I had seen this earlier. Further proof the fire flower is superior:
http://kotaku.com/5550079/how-mario-celebrates-memorial-day
I do like your answer for this week’s feedback question it’s just that i don’t think fighting liquid in metal gear solid 4 was as epic as it was in the original metal gear solid. Why? Well they were just fighting for the hell of it, like ok let’s fight man to man one last time.
Now when you play the first game, they were fighting for one reason. Snake was fighting liquid to save meryl and liquid was fighting snake because he literally wants to prove that he is superior. After the fight, he falls off metal gear REX and we first assume he is dead. So Snake starts to talk to the cambell. And we find out that the entire shadow moses incident is to be terminated, as in they are going to bomb it. Now this was epic. They didn’t have anything like that in the future games which made it so epic. Cause as your trying to escape, liquid is on his keep shooting at you. I still consider this part of the final boss as well. Finally you escape, liquid crashes, you crash. ok now your brother is dead. oh wait no he’s not, but then he finally dies from Foxdie. Oh wow of all things, that little virus kills him. We blow his HIND D down, he still lives, he crashes along with metal gear REX, still lives. Finally we beat his ass down and he falls off of REX, i was hoping the fall would atleast break his legs or something but no. He was still up and running around. The whole ending of the game was very epic. Because we were just wondering, will that blonde haired bastard ever die???????
I do like the fist fight in MGS4 though, it wasn’t epic, but it was fun cause they made every scene similar to a previous game, which i liked.
I suppose it’s my choice because it’s my first true exposure to the series. I figured it’s a great point to jump in with all the flashbacks and fill in information. But dude, you can’t really contest that it’s really epic that out of all the crap Liquid goes through what really takes him down is a fist fight on a sub. Two old bastards who are still crazy as hell and amazing fighters. Either one could die at any minute. It’s just the most simple, but honorable seeming way to end it all between them. No guns, no pride, just fight for honor. I dunno. It also did seem like a fight for the hell of it, but that kind of makes it epic too. I mean, yeah perhaps the fight to see who is superior could be more epic like in Rocky with the Russian who juiced up and Rocky who hauled logs in the woods. But, this is just two old guys with opposite ideals sick of it all. Their purpose is war and they are trying to escape that. In a sense they give in to the ideology by fighting for the sake of fighting, which is what the world around them has sufficed to, but in a way they abolish it when they regain the sense of brother fighting brother and the tragedy of war. It’s like the civil war. Brothers had to fight brothers. But while there is a strong sense of brutality in their fight it’s also complex in the sense that there appears to be a brotherhood, a bond which gives way to a sense of honor. So it’s not just for nothing. It’s like black and white, good and evil coming together in a clash to see who will last the longest, but neither hate each other. I dunno. This whole scene just created a complex reaction from me. Does this make any sense or does it seem like I’m rambling on. I feel like Hideo Kojima doesn’t just want people to play his games, he wants people to think about them.
I know what you mean. Both men were fighting to see which one was superior. I believe both were also fighting to see which son was superior in the eyes of big boss. Something like that. They were created, like solidus. If i could remember the whole plot word for word then i could explain it better. Though before the fight liquid just says he has been defeated so let’s fight for the hell of it. Which the fight was good and all. The music from past games, the fighting was even good. And now when you say two old guys. It just makes me think it is now even less epic than before lol. We both have different tastes but we both like the same kind of games too. I just think that fight would of been more epic and fun if they had put like a timer or something, like you had to beat liquid in 5 minutes before the SUB sunk or something. Ya know what i mean?
Well, not just any old guys, the baddest ass old guys alive. Ehem, yeah. But anywho, I think it would be awesome if they could make a Solid Snake movie with Clint Eastwood as Old Snake. Is it me, or would that be the best casting role for Snake ever? I mean, his image was inspired by Clint Eastwood, so why not do it while Clint is still kicking!? Amiright? Amiright?
now that i can agree on, but does he have the voice for it. We already know you can kick ass. Talking about those two movies with the chimp. Clyde strip the caddy. HAHA love that. He kicks so much ass in those. And that is about the only two movies i saw with clint eastwood. I mean my dad says, come down to watch a funny movie. Oh yeah it was funny.
But what about otacon? Umm, maybe bill gates with longer hair, haha!
Hahaha. Well, now that he’s pretty much as old as dirt so is his voice. It’s nice and gravelly. Like, it gravel had a voice this is what it would sound like. Watch a gran turino trailer. “Get off my lawn.” Sure, his voice was nice and smooth when he was younger, but I think his voice now would fit. Also, he’d look cool with a bandana. If it ever comes in to fruition and Clint has to work his ass off to play the role I hope he can. Either that or minor CG to beef up his body a little.
Well now does it have to be old snake? there could be a young one lol
Hahaha. Well, if it’s a young snake I say David Hayter. I think he could pull off the look, maybe. He is the voice actor. But, Clint Eastwood playing a young Snake if he were still young would be badass. Just watch any of the old Westerns he’s done. The man with no name trilogy is a must see.
Wow!
“He’s Remembered!”
I cannot believe someone remember me! Yes, I was mostly text only. I still don’t own a camera, I posted that video from my work laptop.
Thanks, Now I will go watch those.

Well, it’s not so much you are the link to your site. I remember seeing those games. Mind you I still haven’t played any of them, but I saw them.
Not sure if this counts but killing ragnaros in WoW was just SOOOOO EPIC!
He just dwarfed everyone and the fact that it used to take 40 people to kill him makes him my choice.
it takes 40 people to kill him? That sounds epic, post some videos i need to see this.
Well, it USED to take 40 people to kill him when the lvl cap was 60, now anyone can walk in there at 80 with 2-3 people and pwn him =(
But when you killed him with 39 if your buds yelling in their mics, it’s like you won the game…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DO5Tz6moVI&feature=related
at around 1:30 is when the fighting begins =P
Ha wow, how does one play for so long to get up to level 60 or 80. Is it addicting as they say it is? how long would it even take?

I know it is long, but think of it as more quality and less quantity. I won’t post as much video comments this week cause i don’t think it is needed.
But i do like tom’s pick for this week’s question, but i think i know of a better boss battle that was even more epic. And i pretty much explained why it was while my throat hurts because i kind of yelled a lot.
But i think another good pick is the first wily stage in megaman 10. You get to fight 9 robot simulators that are simulating bosses from the past 9 games. Which were elecman, woodman, geminiman, ringman, napalm man, flame man, slashman, frostman, and finally tornadoman. Isn’t that some epic shit hehe.

FIRF pick: Assault Fleet.
Best Boss Battle: Not Star Control 2, strangely enough. Gonna go with Megaman X4 on this one.
All this introspection got me thinking about a new game, tell me what you think.
Don’t worry Joe. I shaved yesterday too. It’s getting too hot outside (JK, I just shaved it because it was time to stop being lazy)
Great game idea! A few things it reminded me of, and questions about the game mechanic.

Looks like I’m trying to remain anonymous in the thumbnail of my video response.
You’re on the right track. The video comment I was trying to be brief and the idea itself is very sketchy so far. Lemme recap for everyone what I’ve got so far (and because the video seems to be out at the moment) I suggested an idea for a game where:
o You pick the levels you’ll play ala megaman aware of what the power up is at the end is and what it’ll do for you.
o The first two levels you pick the boss steals the upgrades for him/her/itself before you get it and each time uses them to fight you. You lose these power-ups forever.
o On the third level you are told very clearly that the boss will be stopped from taking this one, so it’s yours alone. This one you get to keep.
o The game continues like this. The boss takes 2, you get 1. At the end of each level the boss fights you, each time incrementally stronger… except where you got the upgrade in which case you get a “Hoo-rah” moment as you try out your new powerup and get a feel for it.
o At the end of the game you’ve got 3 upgrades, the boss has 8, but you’ve pretty picked who gets what up to this point so the final fight is what you make it.
o “Bwahaha, you can never defeat me….” “NOOOOooo! How did you defeat me?!”
Here’s the parts I haven’t worked out:
o What type of game is this? Think about it. This mechanic could be applied to a metroid-vania/megaman side scrolling platformer, a top down zelda-like, a SHMUP, rail shooter, FPS… what else? Just about anything.
o Once the type of game is picked what will be the power-ups you’ll be fighting for?
o Will the presence or absence of certain power-ups affect the main game. Like for example if you let the boss have the spring shoes does that mean you’ll never be able to jump to the top of that cliff and get the special item? Obviously this adds a level of complexity and adds areas to the game that most people will never be able to get to.
o The obvious solution to the above is to make it so that the 12 power-ups are really only 3 or 4 power-ups with minor variations between them, like spring boots vs winged boots vs rocket pack, so as long as you get one of them these areas become accessible, but then doesn’t that mean that the final outcome will be less varied? Personally I don’t like this solution and would try to avoid it.
Will I ever make this game? Maybe, but not any time soon. Won’t I be upset if someone steals this idea and doesn’t credit me? No. I get to play the game and I didn’t have to make it? Where’s the downside?
Anyways, thoughts. Let’s develop this idea a bit.
I have a lot of ideas about this. I think I could type them out rather than trying to record a third time.
In response to things you haven’t worked out yet in order:
o First thing I thought of was side scroller
o Poweup ideas:
(There could be similar power-ups but ones that function differently than the other ones and also function differently in conjunction with different power-ups)
Speed Boots – increases speed
Armor – Protects, but makes heavier (this will effect other powerups)
Jet Pack – Max altitude and thrust but least air time. (Air power-up that works best with armor and becomes more stable with armor)
Spring Boots – Maximal hight accomplished with rhythmic jumping (Not sure if can be combo-ed with speed boots.)
Wings – Loftily lifts you up (think kirby) and then at peak glides down (think Pit)
You could also have a whole subset of weapons to buy or weapons that are power-ups and have power-ups that are capable of being combined with the weapon. For instance, a canon arm maybe. Pair the cannon arm with wings and you get light airy blasts, pair it with speed boots and the cannons launch crazy speeds.
But, variation allows for maximal replay value in that you will be testing the best possible combos. Or, you could challenge yourself and make difficult combos work.
Final idea for the night: the different combos you get and the ones the boss get determine the story’s ending, so it leaves room for a ton of endings. Perhaps way too many, going dangerously into the realm of the cookie cutter ending but with different combos.
I would seriously love to see someone develop this because I would play it like crazy. It would also prove for some of the most epic bosses ever known to man. Maybe it could develop the boss on the fly and create truly unique appearances as his end result. And at the end you can save your combo power-up master dude person and the boss so you can play the levels over again or something with your created character so you can tweak him as you play through the second time.
Oh yes, and maybe it could have a mass effect mechanic in saving your avatar for a sequel or something. If this were to occur the game would have to adjust different factors so it’s more difficult for the established character.
Rather than someone starting from scratch on the sequel.
I think if you throw in the megaman weakness idea into this mix, you may have a killer app on your hands. Say that each upgrade installs a piece to the ship, both yours and the boss. Each piece is weak to another piece. if the pieces take too much damage, they can’t be used for the remainder of the level. (or fight in the case of the boss.) I realize that’s a lot more work, coding-wise, but it will stop players from min-maxing abilities.
I thought of some more power up ideas:
Particularly magic power ups, like perhaps levitation or spell casting.
Also, it would be cool if there was a whole pool of power ups but you couldn’t get all of them by games end. Only the eight power ups the boss has and the three you have (or whatever the ratio would be) Then if you chose to go through the game again you could keep your current power ups and try to get more, but regardless I feel that the boss should always have more than you, which is where a sequel in which you can carry your already power-ed up character would be good.
If you start from scratch on a sequel then I say the boss starts the same as usual, but if you carry over a character I think the boss should have some stock power-ups on hand from the last game. Maybe the same ones you have.
This idea has really taken a hold of you Tom. I thing that the idea as describe above could be taken by any number of people. Personally I’m between a top-down zelda-like or a top-down space shooter ala star control 2.
I thought last night about categorizing the power-ups into the four elements, Earth, Wind, Water, and Fire. 3 each under each category. That way the boss gets at least one complete “set”. If the player goes for one complete set they get some sort of uber power move, tho the boss will have 3 complete sets for 3 uber power moves.
I like the idea of shorting the player. Human players are always more powerful than the NPC just by virtue of being humans. So in my mind it’s only fair to super charge the boss. however, if I swing things a little in the favor of the player with 5 for the player and 7 for the boss then under this idea of sets it would be possible to prevent the boss from getting any complete sets, but you wouldn’t be able to get a complete set, or you could get one complete set, but the boss would be guaranteed at least one too. So the math works out okay.
This to me is the perfect project for me to finally pick up gamemaker to make.
So, then you could try to go for one of the four elements when the boss gets the rest? Would you get any uber moves for combo-ing different power-ups from the different elements? Sounds good so far. An overhead view, like the classic Legend of Zelda, would give the game more depth. How would the game play out? Would it be platform where you fight the boss after every level or more like super mario where you are in worlds and at the end of the world you face the boss? Also, if it’s top down will there be a kind of openness to it? What will determine the encounters with the boss? Will it be more like an rpg? I like the idea of other people swooping in to distract the boss. That’s pretty cool. It could be a sort of band of merry men who are rugged but cheery and give you time to run behind the boss to get the power up. There could be a neat little cut scene each time where you are approaching the power up and don’t know if you will get it or not then the boss (who I’m envisioning as a giant red dragon, which just happens to be my way of picturing it.) lands between you and the power-up. On the occasion he takes it you fight him after, but if he doesn’t the merry men swoop in as he grasps the power-up knocking it out of his hands before he can meld with it allowing you to get the power-up and then help the merry men complete their battle against the boss.
Feel free to use any of these ideas. Also, feel free to use none of them if you so choose. Just creating dialoge for thought. I like thinking about this.
Dang, I’m kind of drilling on the questions. Hope this helps out Joe. If you decide to work on this I will totally play it the moment it hits the internet, or maybe test it out or something.
But, if anyone likes any ideas I’ve posed and wants to run with them that would be awesome, because I know nothing about the programming end of a game.
If you couldn’t tell I kind of started envisioning it taking place in medieval times. You know what would be interesting, medeval times but in a futuristic setting (a la firefly, a space western).
is viddler not working cause i can’t view toms videos or joes.
Btw tell me what you think of this. The ten foot midget says the most epic boss battle is level 99 in tetris………ummm what boss is in tetris at all? Come on!!!!
Btw, might have a new female joining us. Yup yup, she is my younger sister. You guys will probably be opened eyed by her beauty.
Viddler does this from time to time. And it’ll fix itself in a bit. Maybe a few minutes, maybe an hour, maybe not until the morning.
24 hours. More than 24 hours the videos have been down. Someone’s slacking on a Friday.
Or their gone forever.
Which would be uberfrustrating since it actually took me all day to find the time to do that.
Nice to know you at least recognized my games. (Thats the first step right?) BTW, tell you friend that Sauce Lifter is pretty cool.
About your game idea. Sounds sweet, while you were describing the game I was picturing a topdown ship shooter, even though I hate those. On thinking about it more though, something like Gunstar Hero style would be pretty neat. You might want to go with a 1-1 ratio on the power ups though. After the boss stole my first power up and the stole my second, I would be sorely temped to just be like, Am I ever gonna get a power up? Or at least let the player get the first powerup then have the boss steal the next two etc. A random pattern would be interesting because once players learned the 2-1 ratio, they would then purposely choose a powerup that they didn’t care about (or cared the least about) so that the boss would get only those.

now that my friend is a good answer. But when you think about it, she fucking shot meryl like 5 times. She lays there on the ground. (by a bunch of claymore mines if i might add.) So funny when he CODECs otacon and asks, i need a sniper. Oh go all the way back to where you faught ocelot. OH GREAT, I HAVE TO GO ALL THE WAY BACK THERE! Finally get to fight her, and i’m not surprised you didn’t kill her the first round. She literally slaps snake and leaves a mark on him.
Ok so the second fight, your out in the cold, and indeed this is the same battlefield where Crying wolf took place. You see a wolf in this scene too. You kill her, and the only thing that i think made it emotional was the fact that otacon had some sort of feelings for her. He covers her face with the towel he snagged earlier. That part made it a little emotional.
But speaking of emotional scenes. After you finally kill vamp in MGS4. The part with naomi and otacons Mark VIII machine, she dies and otacon is crying, i actually broke out a few tears cause………who could love that nerd ever again?
That’s precisely the reason I keep coming back to MGS4. It struck me in a way no other video game has. It was thought provoking and emotional. Hideo Kojima is a freaking genius.
ok ok ok, how is killing the ducks in duck hunt a fucking epic boss battle!!!! please somebody shoot me! ughh living with the Ten foot miget is like living with Freddy Kruger!!!
Great episode. I found last week’s free indie rapid fire games to be great, I’m excited to play these. Mr. Runner sounds sweeeet.
Our picks for most epic boss battle in any game ever!!! With some non relevant arguments too. Rocket Knight Adventures and Final Fantasy 3.

The more versions of himself he destroys the stronger he becomes…soon he will become the most powerful being in any dimension. Then him and Jet Li will need to battle.
Hey there Bytejacker and Joe Larson and friends!
I’m another one o’ those voyeurists who finally decided to register. I’ve been following the show from the very beginning. My name’s Rafael, I’m 33 years old, I live in Argentina, and I’m an aquarius (in case any of you were wondering).
I’m not really an “internet-social” guy at all, but after such a long time watching the mostly same crowd following the show (Joe Larson) and each of them being awesome, I thought to friggin’ register already n’ see if I can throw a few ingredients of my own into the Bytejacker stew.
I’d like to try videoing but this viddler thing isn’t working for me (something about a denied permission).
For starters, I’d like to take a crack at the Feedback question. Straight and to the point: SHODAN, from System Shock 2.
As far as I’m concerned, this boss fight begins as soon as you enter her cyberspace world, with her doing the “GlaDOS mindfuck” comments. At the time, to me, epic. And creepy.
Welcome dude!
Thanks for watching us all this time. Glad to finally see you posting here. Viddler’s a little kooky sometimes. I suggest starting a free acct. on their site and then once you have it, log in via the audio video comment button below and it “should” work :) It’s always nice to see new faces around here so I hope you can get it working.

It’s only monday morning here. Monday afternoon is the cutoff.
Hey, good, my comment seems to be back. That’s good. I don’t konw if I was going to have time to re-record.
You’re the man Laurence, I can always rely on you to leave a comment when I need it. You’re still good this week, and surprisingly the first person to leave your feelings on the indies on video this week. I’m wondering where all the love went. ;)
I’m guessing the logging in thing is slowing down the flow of new folks, and old folks sometimes have busy weeks. Adds up to a really slow week. Surprisingly slow.
I comment on at least one free indie. I guess I didn’t leave my thoughts on mr runner. I have still not managed to play FiNCK.
Glad my comment above is back because I was not going to get a chance to re-record I’m sure.
@Joe via your game idea:
I sort of like the concept. It reminds me a bit of what x3 did with the red chip upgrades. You could only pick one or two I think and any more your would run down your system and explode I beleive. So, my ideas.
-Game type? Of course, metroidvania. I see no other way. I instantly thought of metroid prime when you asked that for some reason.
-Yes to the idea of having a boss steal your weapons and you only getting a smaller, though hopefully more powerful set.
-Idea one: Your mission is to gather the 8 mystical orbs to fight a demon. Only it’s the 21st century, and the boss completely disregards your picks of rocket launcher, jet pack, and personal sheild. I wonder who wins?
–Idea two: You can combine upgrades! But requires research in which you lose the previous one to make new ones. You have your own custom weapons that he disregards in the final fight. Winner is obvious.
—Idea three: You keep three, you upgrade those three to be more powerful then the 8 he collected. After you beat him, he’s -gasp- not the final boss! You need to level up the other 8 to be able to take on the last boss after the 3 main sub-bosses. Now this final boss can either be -gasp- the upgrade thief with all the upgrades powered up. Or some traitor in the ranks pulling the strings on the entire operation.
-As with any of these “upgrade” ideas, you would need to return to an previously unreachable expansion of a previous area to unlock the final boss chambers. That way you could power up the new upgrades. Which would also allow for a warp systyem in place.
@tpeasetiger: Dont forget these:
-necklace
-rings
-ankle bracelets
-Eyewear
-vambraces
-earwear
Maybe I’m getting a bit carried away?
Hmm, video comments kinda broken. Viddler has been having troubles this week. So gonna have to text this one.
So to Tom, ZenAthiest, and xhunterko, I love that everyone had emphatic ideas about what the game had to be, what it was going to be. I loved that you all got carried away with this idea. This abstract seed became something concrete in everyone’s head unique to them and that to me is awesome. My thought is I’m going to go make my game, YOU should go make your game. Even if a dozen games show up overnight all touting this “boss crafting” mechanic they would each be so unique and so different that I doubt they’d even be recognized as having the same root idea.
Boss crafting. Boss. Craft. Bosscraft!
World of Bosscraft? Yeeeeeeah, no.
Hey Joe, if I may just drop this small upgrade mechanic to your game idea just ‘coz hey, writing stuff is free! (But makin’ a game? That takes actual work! I mean c’mon…)
Anyway, thing is, how about when it comes time to upgrade, you have the choice of whether you want to keep the upgrade yourself or allow the enemy to keep it. Of course, there’d have to be some sort of benefit/hindrance to each upgrade, like if you keep it, you get a cool attack but some sort of “elemental weakness”. Or it could be that final boss will NOT have that weakness if you chose to keep that upgrade for yourself. I guess they’d have to all be pretty distinct so as to not always follow the same upgrade path on each playthrough.
Got more convoluted than I imagined it, as I try to explain this, but I hope it was clear in general.
Wow… Lemme try that again. I can’t make any sense of my own explanation. Brief recap:
- Whenever the upgrading happens, you actually choose whether to keep it or let the enemy keep it.
- If you keep it, you get a benefit but also some kind of hindrance/weakness.
- If you let the enemy keep it, same thing, it’ll have that power along with some weakness.
That’s it in a nutshell I suppose.
Na, I got your meaning, and that’s a perfect example of why you should make the game. Because my game won’t do that.
I’ve thought it all out. At the start of the game you’re given some artifact that you are told you have to fill up with powerups. You’re told the world has 12 powerups but you only have slots for 5. There are 12 temples and a badguy on your tail. (But unsuspecting player’s don’t know the stealing aspect yet). You choose a first temple, beat it, get to the powerup room, and the boss sweeps in and steals your first powerup flat out. For non-bytejackerites this’ll come as a shock and they’ll be wondering if this is the point of the game. So the next powerup they’ll pick something weak and sure enough it’ll get stolen. At this point the player will be about ready to quit. But before you fight the boss (and it has to be before you fight the boss or there will be no incentive to fight them) some NPC heroes will show up and tell you in no uncertain terms that when you beat the boss they will bind him down and guarantee that the next powerup is yours to keep.
So I’m hoping at this point the player gets it. They’re going to get 5 of them, the boss is getting 7, and they kinda pick who gets which ones. I think maybe by the end there’ll be a slightly random aspect to the last 3, so whiever ones you leave for the end might go either way. Just to keep it interesting. But that’s never been a problem. Not since save-and-restore.
I also am definitely including the aspect of 4 elements with 3 powerups in each element. Getting a full set affords you some powerup, but so too with your enemy. If you’re clever you can get a full set and prefent the boss from getting more than a full set as well, or you can forgo getting a full set to insure the boss doesn’t either.
Oh, and one more thing, the over-world map and dungeons will all be procedurally generated.
OK, next week I’ll do a video comment, I swear.
So much work to do, and so much due today, but after today I just have to wait till the next project!
As for most epic boss battle, I would have to say the first- last bosses in shadow of the colossus.
Just when you think it couldnt get more crazy, you run into the flying one, or the underwater one, or the sand snake like one.
Wrong account!
OK, next week I promise to do a video comment.
So much work to be done, and so much due today… but after this, no projects till maybe Saturday soo…awesome!
As for most epic boss battle, shadow of the colossus, hands down. Not sure anyone else said it yet.
But just when you think its done being crazy, they throw a flying one, and a swimming one, and that sand snake one. And its a game with only bosses so….
there ya go
Sounds great! I think the reason we all got on the bandwagon is simply ‘coz it’s a neat, truly original idea.
