Hello Games

Sometimes I have strange dreams, you guys. One time I dreamed that my dog was half unicorn. One time I dreamt of a half-car, half gazelle. And this other time, I dreamt of a game that was part Trials HD, part Excite Bike, and part Little Big Planet. That one actually came true. It’s name is Joe Danger, and it’s out for the PS3.

Best 2-D beat um up ever? now when you say beat um up you mean like a street fighter kind of deal here???
cause the answer is simple and that is going to be mike tyson’s punch out.
Beat-em-ups are generally sidescrolling games where you mostly punch and kick your way through levels. Think Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Altered Beast, that general formula. Street Fighter and the like are usually referred to as just fighting games instead of beat-em-ups.

TMNT The manhattan project and turtles in time.
I actually already played GunGirl a week ago so I can give a shot review on that one, somehow a very interesting theme/setting and my favorite genre combined in this one led to a fast but deep disappointment. GunGirl has no soul, maybe because she is also a zombie for quite some time already.
And I don’t have much to say about Beat-’em-ups, never was my thing.
Hey dudes, long time no see!

By the way if Castle Crashers IS qualified I would like to make that my vote.
Good to have you back dude. I have to agree that Castle Crashers is totally a great pick. Even though it’s recent, it’s still old school arcade style as far as I’m concerned. God I love that game!

first it was musical metal that Kept me from posting, now it’s gonna be actual metal. I’m going back to work dudes. :( just managed to catch this episode before i go. great one, very funny :) . it’s a shame that Joe Larson’s graphs didn’t get a look in :p
Anyways, I dunno what net access I’ll have on this new hunka chunka metal I’m going to. or for how long I’ll be out there. so if i do go silent, that will be the reason.

Quick FIRF and feedback response, as well as a little bit of cannibalism.
So apparently my well graphed out argument against Hydroa had no effect. Real shame because I was really hoping I’d never see this sort of substance-less BS game made ever again. Ah well.
Liked the episode. Didn’t get to do one where Jon didn’t live there, eh? Ah well.
By the way, Joe. My Geometry book has an author named “Ron Larson”.
Is he related to you?
Not that I know of. I’ve seen lot’s of Larson on my math text books. There’s also Gary Larson. Again, no known relation. Larson is just a good name to have.

All decent games, but I’m sorry man — this is crazy talk. Capcom’s whole lineup of under appreciated beat em ups ruled Konami. They had better graphics, better design, tighter, more technical game play and were just so cool and rewarding. Maybe they had crappier licensed properties; I’ll admit who the heck cared about Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, but the games were top notch. TMNT and Simpons were just so sloppy; no skill, all mash.
Everyone knows Final Fight, but some of their lesser known ones are amazing; Punisher, Heroes of the Round, Aliens VS Predator, Armored Warriors, D&D, and their masterpiece: Warriors of Fate! (AKA The Devouring of Heaven and Earth II: Battle of Red Cliffs) It had great characters, a cool classical Chinese setting, was delightfully brutal at the time and the perfect balance of simplicity and complexity in the moves.
That’s the trick to every great beat em up I believe — the sweet spot between accessible simplicity and some depth to the available techniques for the player who wanted to dive in, but not so complex that you were playing Street Fighter II sideways. I found all the Konami games to be off the simple end, and Aliens VS Predator kina felt like you were always tripping over yourself all the time. As avid connoisseur of the genre, I never found any game more perfectly balanced than Warriors of Fate — I highly recommend that anyone who hasn’t played it MAME it up!
When I was in high school there was a mall with two video arcades that were having a price war that was a boon of us; one place you got 4 credits for a quarter, in one the games all took nickels. They had Warriors of Fate and I played for *hours*. These were also the halcyon days of Samurai Shodown till we puked.
It’s too bad that despite all their efforts SNK never really came into their own with beat em ups. Terrible as it kind of is there’s a special place in my heart for their Final Fight ripoff, Burning Fight — it’s fun to smash all the shops. And Segoku was wonderfully creative and cool in it’s design and settings. But yeah, they all just kina sucked. They did make a very late comeback with Sengoku 3, which has amazing animation and art, satisfying and cool combo chains, and awesome character deign, but somewhere between dull backgrounds and limited and poorly animated enemies, and cheap AI it somehow still falls kina flat. A small but crucial failing that took me a long time to put my finger on: Every time you kill a baddie, they fall, stand up, then their spirit evaporates out, then they fall to their knees, then the flicker out of existence — which means, when you knock a guy down, they never stay down! Pales in comparison so slicing guys to pieces in Sengoku 1 and 2!
Great to shout out Sunset Riders though — super fun game; the opening animation used to give the impressionable young me chills. Though I do think it’s not a beat em up — more a side scrolling shooter in the metal slug genre.
I know I know — this should be a video comment; I’m working on it. :)
I almost said Sunset Riders. Sunset Riders could be the greatest arcade game ever made. But it’s not really a beat-em-up so I didn’t.
“Beat-em-up” as a genre always seemed odd to me. It’s less about the type of game and more about the type of combat portrayed. I always considered beat-em-ups strictly of the side-scolling quasi-3D variety, but 2D side scrollers like Metal Slug or Bad Dudes, or any fighting game could technically qualify. In fact there’s an indie game that’s a first person fist puncher that would qualify, tho it’s hardly old school that one.
Another great candidate for this week’s question would be Golden Axe, tho Golden Axe II in the arcades would be my pick, just for the centauress you could play who’s legs mysteriously disappeared when she got on a vehicle.
Then there’s also Dynamite Cop and Dynamite Cop 2. Dynamite Cop and Dynamite Cop 2 could be the greatest arcade games ever made.
For free indie rapid fire, my vote goes to Trigger man because;
1. The game is made by Coolio Niato (Danny). Danny also made my favorite flash game when I was seven. If anybody wants to check the game out, It’s called lightbot.
2. It has grappling hooks.
After hearing those two things in the video, my vote immediatly goes to Trigger man, without even playing the other two free indies.
Dude Joe danger looks a lot like Jon, ahahahahahaha……
and anthony carboni, you wanna know who that was who left that voicemail for you????
THAT WAS MY 19 YEAR OLD SISTER!!!!!!!
One of my co-workers said the exact same thing today. Personally I don’t see the resemblance.
Your sister? . . . . . . suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure
hey way to just blow the whole damn thing. Dude i think you guys should give me that chicks number, she sounds hot. I’ll make some luigi babies with her.
Old school beat ‘em ups, huh? So many to choose from! Where to begin…
OK, I really hope I manage to get a video done this time. If not, here’s my Feedback answer(s):
ALTERED BEAST.
At the time, that game just blew me away. I loved the tiger-man form.
Now if I could choose my 5 favourites: Double Dragon, Captain Commando, Vendetta, Knights of the Round, Spider-Man.
There’s more, but I’ll restrain myself dammit.
“Security token missing.”
That’s what Viddler’s telling me. Anyone know why? Or a workaround?
Jeez Viddlers really acting up this week. It’s actually been doing the same thing for me. The other option is either leave it through youtube or record it and upload it via viddlers site and when you log in through here you can select your pre-recorded video. Either of those should work.
Sorry for the inconvenience
I actually did record a video locally and tried to upload it via Viddler, but that also wouln’t work. Can’t remember why.
I guess I’ll have to try youtube, although I really really wanna do it here.
Not going to lie, I basically have about 3-4 quotes per episode nowadays that I just want to repeat to people…
“I can’t hear this hooker scream over your moment of self-realization.”
and
“Why do people climb mountains, John? Or sleep with the popular girls from their high school ten years later even though they’re not all that attractive anymore?”
Sheer brilliance. Keep it coming!
omg where did anthony get that shirt D: i wants it!
Ninja-Bot.com go get it homey!
Best beat’em up ever… Why is it always so hard to pick one of those treasured memories? “Double Dragon” was the first beat’em up I ever played, and I loved it (except for the part where you had to kill your brother to get the girl… weird). Then, “Streets of Rage” came, and took the genre to the next level.
Until “Streets of Rage 2″ arrived…
I’ve played that game SO many times, I could almost beat it blindfolded. To me, that’s the game that perfected the beat’em up formula created by “Double Dragon”.
Runner-ups: “Super Double Dragon” and “Double Dragon Advance”. Also, Capcom’s D&D ones (“Tower of Doom” and “Shadow over Mystara”) were really interesting.
“(except for the part where you had to kill your brother to get the girl… weird)”
You kiddin´? That was like Sixth Sense surprise end-movie plot twist! Twins goin´ at each other to see who lives and takes the girl? Friggin´ awesome!
If I hadn´t chosen ALTERED BEAST, Double Dragon would definately be it for me. Besides, the 2D part of the Feedback question is confusing, in that one might consider beat `em ups like DD or TMNT to be 3D, or “faux 3D”. But I guess that`s overthinking it.

I FINALLY VIDEO COMMENTED. Okay, sort of. Not really, since I wasn’t even able to play all of the games yet. But I’ll do that later. Just consider this as sort of a confirmation that, yes, I will ACTUALLY get to it this time around. I just blame my unwillingness to comment to the fact that when I’m not playing games or out and about, I’m always inexplicably sleepy as fuck. That’s what I was doing these past weeks: hibernating.
Also Anthony: I’ve been playing Galaxy 2 WAY TOO MUCH now that I finally got my hands on it (my brother took it with him to college before). I attribute my unwillingness to look nice for a video comment from last week to the fact that I was playing this game non-stop…in addition to the previously mentioned hibernating.
Wait…was Metal Slug X considered a beat ‘em up? Well okay, I guess you don’t necessarily “punch and kick”, but I mean hey, it’s close enough. I just absolutely loved going on an adrenaline-fueled killing spree through this game with my brothers. I still play it on occasion just for the pure fun of kicking a punch of aliens’ asses.
I don’t really consider metal slug as a beat um up game. Example of 2D beat um up games i’d say, double dragon, teenage mutant ninja turtles. Basically games where you are playing as the character and you always fight like 4 guys then proceed forward into the stage.
Which is why i know what i am picking. It’s going to be good.
And what is with the walls in your…room, or something? Looks like a room you’d find in the Jokers house, literally.
Dagnabit you kids. Well Metal Slug is kind of the same, except you use guns. It’s actually very similar now that I think about it. I dunno, I’ll just say it when I video comment and Jon will weed it out if its not. Which it probably isn’t. But whatever.
And yeah it’s 2 walls in my room, but I think it looks pretty awesome.
Well i think it’s pretty weird, and if metal slug is a gun beat um up game, then i’m picking megaman. Gotta love the blue bomber. He is beating up over 70 robot masters since the 80s
Missed you headphonic. You and that AWESOME wall of yours. I totally need a wall that’s done up like graph paper.
Like I said above, Beat-em-ups are any game that depict melee combat, so that includes a lot of things. But as for old-school beat-em-ups go back to golden axe and TMNT the arcade, bad dudes, double dragon and the like. Wikipedia defines it as “is a video game genre featuring melee combat between the protagonist and large numbers of antagonists” which I would agree with and which would eliminate fighters I guess, so I’m okay with that.
METAL SLUG is totally a beat em up
metal slug is not no where near a beat um up game. If he uses a gun then it’s not. They have to be using their fists or something. Like double dragon.
In close combat he pulls out a knife. Totally a beat-em up.
Yeah but not once in any game do you see the guy beat up any soldiers with his fists. It’s called beat um up, not slaughter um up. There’s a different, and i’ve only seen him use knifes to rescue bums and knife soldiers through the neck. That is a slaughter right there.
Similar game to this, contra, love it!
Eh, I guess they aren’t really “beat ‘em up” games then, since it isn’t melee combat. I suppose I don’t really have an answer for this week’s feedback. :\

Henshin-a-go-go, baby!
I can’t believe I forgot about that one, ah what a classic. It was the perfect mix of fun and a crazy nonsensical plot.
So crazy that there hasn’t been a proper sequel, given all the amazing reviews and hype you would think there would have been more of a push to make something for the current gen systems, or just something to throw on the PSN store for 15$.

Sorry if the sound is off, i have had some problems uploading. Long story short… King of Monsters 2. The only good SNK beat’em up. Built off a fighting engine this plays nicely as an action/adventure. Also, Metal Slug, Contra, Alien Hominid fall into shooters; beat’em ups are a genre that are loosely defined, but shooters are rather distinct.

Hello to Squid John.
Ogre Town deserves more love than I’ve seen it get so far.
Check out the game I programmed on my vacation: Werewolves and Wanderer the text-adventure. You don’t have to be a huge fan of IFs to like this one, this is a text-adventure for the rest of us. And it’s quick. 10 minutes and you’re out. 15 minutes tops. Check it out, tell me what you think:

Noah, you’re awesome.
Follow the steps in “getting started” on Cymon’s Games to begin fiddling with code.
When I say “basic games” I mean text-based, simple, graphicsless. These are the easiest sorts of games to fiddle with and get the payoff with. These are also the games that you can easily fiddle with the most of.
When I say “bytejacker host it” I mean just a shout out, most likely from a blog post, but you know.
Oh, forgot to mention, Werewolves and Wanderer is version 1.0 now, with high score table and stuff. You can catch it here:

See, I’ve said it before but these last 3 videos are proof. I should start writing a script, or an outline, or something so I’m not thinking and redoing my answer mid video.
I’m just glad mokeymoc over shadowed mine, now I can point fingers at the person weirder then me, just like most of my high school life.
Eat or be eaten, or in this case, point fingers or be the one sitting alone at lunch while the people who you thought were your friends abandon me, leaving me cold and alone…
I wont go back to that! I wont!

I forgot to mention that I have no idea how to speak Italian. But I DO know how to fake by basically acting simulating a markov model. Hurray for stereotypes! Where’s that spicy meatball!
