Halloween’s here! Imma be ‘sexy Shigeru Miyamoto.’ Now that you have that horrible image stuck in your head, let us erase it with a review of Double Fine’s new Haloween RPG, Costume Quest.
RADAR: Costume Quest
XBLA, PSN
Turn-Based RPG
Double Fine Productions
$15.00
Halloween is all about being creepy, dark, gaudy, scary, and a little bit hilarious. So what better developer to take on a Halloween-themed game than Double Fine, the people who brought us psychonauts and brutal legend? Costume Quest is their latest, a downloadable for the 3260 and PS3 that combines trick or treating, turn-based RPG gameplay, and their very recognizable brand of humor. This is where a lesser man would pose the question of whether the game is a trick or a treat. I WILL INSTEAD MOVE ON.

What would I do if I could rotate the world? Well why would I want to rotate it anyway when it already does rotate in space on an orbit? I’m sitting that question out.

Sure, you can use it to fly. Just coordinate your falls. Problem is you’d basically be in free fall constantly so over any distance you’re going to be traveling at terminal velocity. And you’d need an IV drip of Dramamine for your stomach. But, yeah, that’d work.
Dude, the hair… THE HAIR! Has it always been that long, I don’t remember it being that shaggy and long in the past. It’s pretty awesome. As are the Christmas lights… what’s up with those?

I figured it out! When falling to the ground, switch to fall up! Because of momentum you would continue falling downwards, however it would get increasingly slower before reaching a stop and falling up. So in that moment when you stop moving, just before you fall up, switch back to down and hit the ground. It’d take practice, but in time anyone would figure out how to tim the landings right!
You’ve got it. You can totally spin thing. Practice enough and it’ll be like walking. But I guarantee that your stomach would be doing flips. Hence the IV comment above.

World upside down? Family Guy already did that for me:

Btw I LOVED this episode. Finally the humor is back and at least you brought some diversity to your background. It feels a lot better (also with the Castle Crashers dude) than the white background.
This episode brought a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig smile on my face
Thanks, dude! Yeah, as I get more comfortable and start getting my workflow down you’ll see more of that stuff sneak it’s way back in.

Man, what an incredible week for Free Indie Rapid Fire. Three really, really great games, all of which I could totally see being Free Indie Countdown winners had they not been pitted against one another.
But yeah, Super Crate Box is my pick. Because I can’t stop thinking about it and I feel like I should have paid money for it and oh my god it is seriously just EVERYTHING I LIKE IN ONE 20MB DOWNLOAD. TIME TO GO PLAY IT SOME MORE~
My feedback response. Looking forward to that gnarly looking zombie driving game. :)

my vote for free indy rapid fire
Love it.
Show feedback for the first minute.
FIRF feedback surprised me this week. The game I thought I would vote for, Super Crate Box, ended up being a game I didn’t enjoy very much. Squawk combined gravity based game play with pirates. But it was kinda shallow. Road of the Dead, however, surprised me. I started out thinking “meh, it’s been done before.” But I kept playing because the story and forced progression through that upgrade system actually made the game way enjoyable. So Road of the dead gets my vote.
Additionally, everyone needs to check out Pirates of the New Horizons. It’s a pirate chick with a grappling hook. (1)Pirate (2) Chick with (3) grappling hook.
You’re already gone aren’t you.

Uh… poll on the front page says voting is closed.
Ok i’m listening to these answers and only one problem. Ok you want to be able to fly so Your there and you turn the world completely around. Well how will that work, your not going to fall off the face of the earth because of gravity. I don’t think it will work like that. Now the furniture on the ceiling thing. Yes that could work, It’s just only if you turn the room around. I think anthony made this question more than it appears to be. What if i can turn the world around, or what if i can turn a room around like in some funny cartoon.
Aha, i myself have the perfect answer. Anyone ever ride Teacups or something at six flags or disney. Just imagine, they strap you in the tea cups and the guy will press his button, the whole room will flip upside down and now your heads and hair are falling to the floor and your trying to turn these teacups while upside down.
Perfect halloween fun, bunch of puke and upside teacup madness added to the mix. Or you can flip the superman ultimate flight upside down so that your upside down the whole time and your only right side up when you go through a loop. Yeah i can just see it now.

Here’s mah comment y’all!
No Jon No!
Next week, I’d like to see Sky Serpents by Nitrome up. Maybe some Minecraft Halloween update coverage, since nobody got it before the servers crashed.
Update to the consumes above:
I’ll make a better video of their transformations (and a better edit) later.
…………….. AHHHHHHHHMMAAAAAZING! I have been dying to make a transformable transformers costume! So good!
OK, thanks to another short notice callout… I now find myself back at work with an inability to stream media from teh interwebs. which is a shame since the videocomments here seemed to be a good laugh before I left :( so I’m gonna have to text comment instead :P
Free indies: All three were excelent games, with one clear winner.
those that didn’t win were super crate box and Squawk
Super crate box very fun, this could have been a full release on an old nintendo or Sega console, it was vey fun, very retro & charming and I enjoyed playing it.
Sqwawk was also a very fun game, it had a great whacky cartooney piratey aesthetic which is rareley seen outside of monkey island. a little trick actually, if you click and hold one green peg, and move your mouse around, the game will default to nearest green peg to the pointer. This helped my enjoyment of the game otherwise it would have been a giant clickathon, which I don’t really enjoy. I think this game would excell as a touchscreen game though and I’d love to see it on something like the DS. :)
Which leaves “Road of the dead” as my winner. I had to reduce the quality of it to play it on my old laptop, but was very smooth after that. The mechanics remind me of an early driving game I used to play on a friend’s amstrad back when I was a kid called “test drive”. as I would level up my car and increase it’s toughness I found myself enjoying the game more and more, I played it throguh to the end. certainly the best driving flash game I’ve played to date :)
Feedback. first of all, a question, If I could flip the world in that way.. would it just apply to me or would it also apply to everyone arround me? if the latter, then that could be scope for mass genocide by litterally tipping everyone off the face of the earth :O not that I would do such a thing :P
IF it just applied to me then the only practical use I would think of it would be never having to take an elevator up a building again, never having to be in a confined space with anyone who unleashes any “silent but violents” :P
is it just me or has the poll completely vanished? any chance we could have the poll go biweekly too? i have to say that “Road of the Dead” was totally awesome. i’m not hating but i got that enviro-bear vibe off it, but this was a winner in my books! :)
OT (minecraft): anyone else managed to build a base in the nether? i’m expecting to see youtube vids with some hardcore gamers farming ghasts and zombie pigmen over the next few days! lol
Every week now.
The poll is on the HOME PAGE. The HOME PAGE, not the page where you make comments. You have to click the link to go to the HOME PAGE to cast your vote. And voting’s open. I just cast my vote.
And speaking of voting, today’s election day. If you’re of age, get out and vote. The indie video gamer voice needs to be heard.
oh one last thing about road of the dead and vibes. two words: christian slater. come on am i the only one?
Dang, kind of wish I posted my free indie rapid fire vote dressed up in my halloween costume.

My response to the question is, if i can rotate a room or whatever. I would turn this teacup ride upside down so the fun will be twice as much as it is now.
Guess who baaaack? :D (And not dead.) Yeah I’ve been gone for a couple days….weeks….months…
I KNOW, OKAY?
Nah, I’ve just been really busy with first some trips across the country that lasted a few weeks, then school, then (seriously) unfinished videogames AND school, now just more school and exams and all this crap. But long story short, I think I’m going to start coming around here again and playing the games each week.
Hey, girl. Good to see you again.
I’ll bet Bytejacker’s new bi-weekly schedule is just about right for you, eh. More time to play the games.
Bi-weekly, eh? Also: when’d this whole office-thing come about? Damn, I really have been gone for a while. xP
And finally: zombie-driving-game is fun. Too fun.
[...] Those weren’t the only ones, though: here are the rest of your responses. [...]
Jon, seriously, how fast you ate 86 chicken wings? Is it a competition?!
