Listen: sometimes, a company just doesn’t know what to do with their own properties. Sometimes, fan projects have to take the law into their own hands. Guests Tara Long and Jonathan Holmes from Destructoid join Anthony to look at some of the best fan projects ever.

FEEDBACK: AND YET IT MOVES
Last week we asked you what you would do if you could turn the world upside-down like in Broken Rules’ “And Yet It Moves”. We’ve selected some of your best answers and the Broken Rules team will give away three copies of the game to the best ones this week on our blog.
Next Week’s Question: If you were going to make a fan game for any franchise, which would it be? What kind of game would you make?

You played Avoid the Noid on DOS too? Lordy, I never thought I’d run into any one else who played that game. Must have been pirated a lot.
PS, Joe – you’re totally allowed and expected to plug ASCIIpOrtal, but you still have to give ANOTHER dream fan project as your answer.

For those who didn’t know, for those who haven’t been around, you can download my fan game ASCIIpOrtal here: http://cymonsgames.com/asciiportal/
Testing the new video with link and seeing if my comment goes into moderation.
Hi Joe
Loved ASCIIpOrtal! I actually stumbled upon Bytejacker when you mentioned them on your website for featuring the game!
PS. Anthony the free indie percentages is wrong 1% 4% 43% where 43% should be 95% correct?
Correct. It’s a typo.
Oh yeah, ASCIIIpOrtal was and is excellent. I had that running all the machines when I more than one.
Always working on my own map sets with dialogues and story. Especially trying to make functioning engines.
So much fun in such a simple format.
I had Avoid the Noid on DOS as well. Got it through Domino’s Pizza, and was on 5.25″ floppies IIRC. Some of the upper levels were fairly close to impossible. Much banging of the head against the keyboard.

Vote for me to win:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F94ZqwXgJ5w
is this a democracy?
can i vote you get laser eyes? much better imo….unless it’s like cyclops and you need to wear glasses all the time……hang on, that’s where you are now. square one’s a bitch.
Hey, everybody. Day 2. If you haven’t voted today, please do.
is that a dolphin, unicorn and killer whale trying to fly into your head?
please say, ‘no, it’s a dolphin, whale and killer unicorn’.
thankyou for your consideration.
nich
Oh my, Tara is like a hotter version of Erin Ivy.
Errr.. what was the show about ?
PS : Joe, ASCII Portal is the shiznit. Thanks for the great work.
Wow, this makes me want a PC again, because all those games look awesome! Oh well.
And It seems the video comment function isn’t working for me. Any other mac users having troubles with video comments?
Answer to this week’s feedback: I’d make a (horror) game as described in this story: http://inuscreepystuff.blogspot.com/2010/09/majora.html
Well, I suppose it would just be a mod. But damn, just reading about it gave me the creeps, let alone watching the youtube videos that went with the story. I always thought Majora’s Mask was dark on its own, but this story really just intensified the scary aspects of it.
I’ll do a video later on with my reviews of the Free Indie games, too.
I can’t seem to make a video comment Anthony, it will say allow or deny but i can’t seem to hit either buttons.
was I the only one to notice the error in the free indie countdown? 1%, 4% and 47% does not add up to make 100% votes…
Speak of the devil! I’m making a VVVVVV fangame using Game maker! Coincidence extreme!
http://distractionware.com/forum/index.php?board=2.0 If you’re interested.
I have already played corporate climber, since Jayisgames beat you to that. It’s fun, it’s awesome, and I like how you can replay it, while it is already hard, to become MUCH harder. I have yet to play Fallen Angel, but I actually tried to do it on Yoyogames. Instant play was being an ass, so I might just download it.
Fallen angel? WTH is that? Eh. I’m probably drunk.
An episode about fangames that also mentions Streets Of Rage would have been an excellent place to plug Streets Of Rage REmake: http://www.bombergames,net
Just sayin’.
Er, http://www.bombergames.net. Not with the comma.
Awesome – didn’t know about this one. I’ll check it out.

Testing the video comments since some people have been complaining. Seems to work okay now.

This is the real deal. You can ignore the two comments above. I was just making sure everything was working. And it works for me. Firefox. Windows XP. Hope everyone having trouble with it can work it out.
FIRF – Escape from the underworld. Because it’s awesome, oozes innovation, and is by the Banov, who voted for me in my contest which would be enough for me to vote for him even if his game wasn’t awesome, which is is.
Oh yeah, last day to vote. If you’ve already voted you can vote again, once per day. If you haven’t please do. Every vote counts and I want to win this thing. Whatever you want in the Serious and I Love My Hoopes category, but under Humorous please, for me, vote “Lazer Eyes” please.
http://www.hoopesvision.com/contest/finalists.html
I keep getting confused. The voting is open until tomorrow, so you still have a chance to boost me for 2 votes. Please, please, PLEASE.
Hey, Joe! I voted twice for your entry, but I feel it’s my duty to tell you that your plan to take over the world is missing one critical item: a grappling hook! Even when you’ve got a jet-pack and laser eyes (great to make popcorn, by the way), do not underestimate the usefulness of a grappling hook, as it’s been documented over and over.
Best of luck! :)

I actually have a game idea that boils down to “rocket pack vs grappling hook”.
I wax philosophic about why certain properties spawn numerous fan games while others that deserve it spawn practically zero.
I’ll find out today if I won. I hope I won.
Oh shoot. I had the mic plugged into the headphone jack. Well that’s no good. Don’t watch the video comment above, there’s nothing to hear. (And I ain’t that pretty for looking at.)
I was so wrong. It’s not the last day to vote. But I’m not going to spam Bytejacker with solicitations anymore.
The polls are open until the 28th. Details can be gotten from this YouTube video. thanks to everyone who voted, thanks to everyone who will vote. I’ll let you know if I win. Man, I hope I win.

I WANT A PC! I have PC Envy for the Banov game. AND I have a conspiracy theory for the video comment problem. Cause all across Youtube for me, Bytejacker, Stickam and everywhere else.

You kind of contradicted yourself and said you didn’t like halo. You said you loved it in a previous episode. Unless I’m stupid and that was sarcasm.
Should I make a fan game… nah, let me rephrase that: I WILL make a fan game for “The Maze of Galious”, a title from Konami for the MSX computer, sequel to the brilliant “Knightmare” (and with which it has almost nothing in common).
A somewhat obscure reference, I know. Here, a video of the beginning of the game:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNlzMOwhraY
Today it would be called a Metroidvania, yet it slightly predates both “Metroid” and “Castlevania”. The excellent “La-Mulana”, that many of you have probably played, is a homage to “The Maze of Galious”, and there’s already a really well done fan-made remake, from BrainGames, available for Windows, Mac and Linux: http://www.braingames.getput.com/mog/
I’m gonna make that game come hell or high water, even if that’s the last thing I ever do, as it’s a goal I set for myself pretty early on my life. So, let’s hope this sudden, convulsing pain in my chest, and the vision going black, are nothing but hiccup, ’cause there’s work to be done… Gasp!

I’m BAAAAAAACK!
Your idea sounds to me more like Super Steambirds… which is also a way cool idea.
I’d be happy with either. Though Steambirds you had to select a movement or action each turn, and GSB was automatic. Maybe it could have BOTH modes?!? That’d be sweet…
I wonder if my attempt at remaking the original Zillion on the SMS would fall under this. But the remake has a new map and a few other enhancements to the original.

Nice stuff, I kinda like the new release schedule. It gives a person time to catch up on life.

Ok my new Imac wouldn’t let me record videos so i used my phone.
Quick and simple painless video. Sorry it took so long.

Yo seriously, I know it’s not show related but I could really use some help here. I can’t get the video comment flash recorder to work. It wont recognize or even turn on my iSight Camera, yet the Camera works fine. It’s the same way on Firefox and chrome and I’ve reinstalled flash twice. Any Ideas?
It’s my flash. I think Steve jobs is purposely trying to screw me by making Flash incompatible with the iSight Camera. Gods frak it!

I really miss Jon Rivera and the skits. When I was watching them, I often felt like “come on, enough with the silly, get to the indie gaming goodness!” but, alas, I did not know what a beautiful connection we had until she left me. Wait, what was I talking about?
Um… but, yeah, if it’s a money thing, you should make getting both of those back into the show a priority if you get more resources. I didn’t realize it at the time, but it really helps differentiate your show from any other talking head vlog. The content is great as well, of course, but if the show as a whole isn’t worth watching, I can just skip to the list of new indie picks and try them out, or maybe just watch that part of the show.
The skits & the interaction with Jon really helped give a chance to let you show some personality and let the viewer start to care about YOU, and want to listen to stuff you say not just ’cause it’s good, but because they just wanna hear you talk about stuff ’cause you silly. This show you have now, with the mundane set (the roof was edgy and fresh, kept things interesting! when spring comes, go back to that, too) and nothing but sitting at a desk and talking, is just… not as vibrant. Well, I’ll keep watching so long as you keep making episodes, but I hope you can introduce some new twists to the show!
Escape from the Underworld is pretty great, too, especially with a full vocal soundtrack. Didn’t expect beautiful voice work like that on an indie 1 month challenge game.
