There’s a new Contra out! Sort of. It’s called “Hard Corps: Uprising,” and we’re totally not supposed to call it Contra. (Confidential: It’s Contra)
We’ve also got your picks for the best Tim Schafer games of all time! Let’s get silly!
RADAR: Hard Corps: Uprising
XBLA, Action Platformer, Konami/Arc System Works, $10
I’ve always been a sucker for the weirdest entry in a franchise. My favorite Robocop is Robocop 2, my favorite Batman is Batman Returns, and my favorite Contra game has always been Hard Corps.
Made during the time Konami was getting seriously insane on the Genesis with games like Rocket Knight, Hard Corps was all about taking Contra up about a million notches in terms of action, difficulty and most importantly silliness – for example, my favorite character was Brad Fang, a wolfman with robot arms and oakley sunglasses. Yeah, it’s like that. You either love the game or you hate it. 97% of the world hated it.
That’s why I was pretty surprised to find that Konami’s newest Contra wasn’t just a direct sequel to Hard Corps, they were leaving out the Contra name all together. Now that I’ve played it, it makes a lot of sense – while Uprising uses a lot of classic Contra visual cues and the standard shoot-em-up gameplay, this is definitely something different. Like some lost, Japanese Contra Fan Game from the 90s.

I’ve been completely addicted to King’s Guard for nearly a month now. That game is a free-time-devourer.

Was Hipster Kickball sluggish for anyone else? Had to download for later play so could be an issue from that. Either way I’m torn between the polished addiction of King’s Guard and Dromad, a game I wantingly return to play.
King’s Guard was, as you said Carboni, a real time suck. I thought I’d kicked my puzzle habit, but then you dragged me back in!

King’s Guard: A Trio of Heroes is pretty awesome! Nice mix of RPG, puzzle & tower defense

The cow dolphin background. It is relevant to my interests. Where can I find it?
Cow dolphin? I see no cow dolphin. I just see two completely identical dolphins. You must be under some serious stress if you’re seeing a cow there.

Thought Monday was the cut off for comments but not according to twitter. My hatred of this game grows. Damn Triumph badges!
I actually managed to get into the game a little after my last comment. Decided to give it another go. Then I got through the levels on the first bordered off area and while the item management was cool and unlocking new abilities for my guards and managing them was satisfying. I liked that really only 4 or greater runs really counted for anything so it was best to set up your 4-5 runs instead of just taking the move that’s in front of you, so there was a bit of slowing down and strategizing, which I never really do with Bejeweled.
But as I got nearer the 10th level the rounds were just getting longer and longer. 20 waves of baddies? More like 20 waves per 3 guards so really 60 waves of baddies? No thank you. The game crossed the line about round 8 and it went from fun to grind.
And I ain’t Tony Hawk so I don’t grind.
I grind like a fiend. But I can’t take the simple Attack/Magic/Item/Skill system of most jRPGs anymore. This was a little more interesting. No death (meaning you gained some Exp no matter what) was neat at the start then got annoying when I could slaughter easily but the soldier next to me whimpered out of existence and I had to fight one more freakin time to get the damn triumph badge because he’s a little pissa&?0%#*@&!!!! Or because I don’t always go for the 4 or 5.
