This week we’re in New York at the 2011 Blip Festival – a 3-day showcase of music made using obsolete game hardware. We’ve got interviews and live performances by some of the biggest and up-and-coming acts in the chip scene!

Its was like chipmusic camp. Amazing time. Also, 4mat destroyed. Literally. I went outside the venue and everything was gone after his set. Barren wasteland. Then he played one more song and everything was back again. Only slightly to the left.
Every musician had something epic to bring and they did in a big way.
Plus because of Blip 11, chip fest Miami will prob happen ^_^
New favorite: Zen Albatross. Prefer the darker style. Will FIRF be back on thursday or still off kilter till blip stuff is used up?
This video really made me think. Twice from 2 different artist the point was made that “blip music” is a description of instrument used, not genre. Like the turntable or, heck, the bow and saw, as more people use this new instrument it’ll be less about the instrument and just more about the music. That kinda changes things for me. That makes this a celebration of the instrument same as a guitar fest or an accordion fest, which I would not be surprised to discover is a real thing.
Oh yeah, if you go to chip concerts it very quickly becomes clear that it is a scene independent of genre. The week of Blip Fest 2011 I saw a chip funk band, chip metal, chip shoegaze, chip powerpop, chip prog rock, chip folk and more. It’s not even the instrument so much as the ideology and raw sound, as there are purists like Zen Albatross and Peter Swimm who insist on working within the limitations of a Game Boy and so-called “fake bit” like Trash80 and SHRIMPS who use more traditional electronic music interfaces and sample videogame sounds.
