Ooh, tough. Tetris would have been my pick just based on the game alone having achieved it’s zen like transcendence more than once, but Max makes an excellent point, a point I didn’t consider, and made me ponder and meditate on Katamari’s strange psychedelic visuals and transcendent counter intuitive messages. So I’m going to go with Max. Even tho Tetris is the more meditative game Max made the better argument.
I was going to make my own comment, but you basically said everything I would’ve said… I think Tetris is zennier, but Max definitely spoke his argument in a more zen manner, so he wins. Sorry Carboni, I swapped camps today.
Dude, was that an Invader ZIM reference at 3:39? ANTHONY WINS!
Nah, seriously, Max makes a couple of good points regarding Katamari, and I kind of want to vote for him simply because I personally prefer playing Katamari to Tetris, but Anthony points out the only thing that truly matters here: that the entire external world just melts away when you’re in a game of Tetris. Simple as it is, Katamari is an assault on the senses and you’re ALWAYS aware of it, laughing about whatever insane thing you just picked up or grooving to the sweet quirky J-Pop. Tetris, even with its catchy melodies, just creates a tunnel around the player, allowing them to lose sense of all time and space, focused only on one incredibly minute area of the universe. Tetris is the winner here.
Man, I can’t wait for my deck to arrive. What sucks is that I’ll need to find people to play with.
OK, my decision… I’m going with Tetris. Katamari Damacy have this Japanese-y quirky stereoscope of the game which can be 100% hectic and stressful, even though from that fact that this game is part of the “Come on Japan, WTF” genres. Tetris isn’t meditative, but at least more than Katamari Damacy. Even though that the game gets more stressful when progressing, but at least there’s no weird craziness that’s gotta ruin your flow, so I’m happy for Anthony Carboni of Bytejacker (and sorry for Max Scoville of Destructoid) that I’m going to pick Tetris!
P.S. Max’s Ash cosplay is really good. Does that costume messed his mind up of think Katamari Damacy is a good game?
Play
Tetris. Definitely Tetris.
I feel ya; my family played Tetris to kill time; it’s like a “hobby.”
P.S. Me and my family do have a life.
Aren’t you working to restore the universe or something in Katamari Damacy? And if you don’t succeed the king yells at you. If your idea of meditation is doing stressful work for a tightly wound boss than I guess that makes sense.
You can lose yourself in Tetris though. I’ve seen people play it in a trance-like state, without the assistance of mind altering drugs!
PS – I watched the ending twice because I thought it was weird that i could hear Rebecca Black’s “Friday” in my brain, So, i hate you(not really).
PS reply: I’m another Rebecca Black hater, so I’m joining you.
Ok, so I just beat Katamari Damacy a week ago (not kidding [it was the first so no cash cow bullshit muthafuckas]) so I know it will not win but katamari damacy, how many times do you play a game with 1. a man (who is wearing ballerina tights) singing a song about bananas too you while you roll them up 2. get to travel the world 3. have a parent bad at parenting (thats right i watch constructoid) & 4. get to roll up the world in a sick (but also awesome) masscre of the human species/ THE WHOLE FUUUU*KING WORLD!!!!!!
P.S. I am such a big fan of destructoid, constructoid, the destructoid show, and bytejacker, been wathching you guys for years
so please mention me
I vote for Anthony.
Although their arguments were somewhat similar, Anthony put it in a more clear way. Tetris also has the added benefit of causing this “meditative” state using gameplay alone.
I think it’s interesting Max and Anthony both picked games about organizing the world. Is there something inherently meditative about creating order out of chaos?
I wanted to give it to Katamari because that game is basically one big analog for a zen rock garden, but unfortunately Max never hit on that. Honestly I think Katamari was the better pick, but based on their arguments I have to go with Anthony.
Epic Friday at the background
Yes this one was a lot closer than the last one. Both good arguments.
In the end I went with Max. It also has to do with the fact that he REALLY looks like Ash Ketchum (he should’ve turned his hat around before making an argument).
Also Tetris was good at making me Zen, but even better at snapping me out of it. Throwing the portable thing that costed 3 dollars with tetris on it through the room, because IT JUST MADE ME LOSE.
