Wait, so you have 2 characters, each that “changes the game” but you can switch between them at will without cost? So basically it’s another step between me and jumping that wall. Yes, that’s on my list of hated tropes. You know what another one is? Purchasable upgrades. Not as high on the list because I’ve seen it done right, but I’ve seen it done wrong more.
And that ain’t just sour grapes because I don’t own a 360 to play it on. I really do hate those two things. Seriously, if you’re going to give us 2 characters either make them separate like megaman x4 or have you have to guide them both through cooperatively like in Lost Vikings. You let me switch at will you might as well let me just have them both I have never understood how >1 player characters inhabiting the same body ever made the slightest sense.
You know what would make a good game? Same mechanic only switching cost you a price, like you can only switch a certian number of times per level or only after killing a certian number of baddies. You know what else would work? if the switch happened randomly.and the levels were timed.
Sorry, really raging here about a mechanic in a game I haven’t and most likely won’t play, but it’s only because of all the games I have played that did this. Off the top of my head: Trine, Inspector Gadget on the GBA, Fury of the Furries, tho in that last one it was more like switching your inventory and a later game, Pac in Time, just gave you seems to have recognized that as it took the exact same game and turned the 4 characters into inventory items.
No, I get what you mean- I’d have liked to see a design where you NEEDED to be one character or the other to get through a level.
If you think of the character switching as a sort of variable difficulty level you can change on the fly, it becomes easier to rationalize. Plus it’s just funny.
Great review, one thing thats bugged me for a while and I keep noticing it in your videos, you put up green boxes with the game info on it, and for whatever reason it almost always obscures the action, its a easily fixed production step and it just seems like a lazy oversight. I want to see all the awesome gameplay footage, don’t hide it!
I actually think it would be lazy to do it any other way. Those boxes give the pertinent information about the game – cost, developer, links, etc., without making people go to show notes or leave the video to get the info they need.
The boxes never stay up for more than about 7 seconds, so tiny amounts of footage are obscured, but in the course of a 4 minute review it’s pretty negligible.
Well obviously i don’t think the boxes should be removed, just relocated if they interfere with the action…
Obviously with a game showing the entire environment is great, but (generally) my sight is focused on the character in the game that I’m controlling, and when him, the bullets he’s firing, and the enemy he’s firing at are obscured, its a little annoying.
And yes I understand its only seconds, and if it was in just one video, I’d be totally cool with it, but I’ve seen it a few times now, and I know what an easy fix it could be to just move it around in production.
Finished it when it came out and I’m really glad to see it finally reviewed here :]
Great review as usual !
I had trouble at first with the gameplay as it’s really unforgiving and your really have to learn your timings for the combos and jumps. But once this is done, it’s really fun to play. And the designs and humor got me coming back for more for a long time ! (thinking about the music, the sprites and watching the review, now i want to get back to it again).
The one thing that bugs me though is I really wanted to play it with a classic nintento controller, or at least a controller that feels old school as the japanese Sega saturn controller did. Playing such a game with thos bit analog round buttons somethimes feels frustrating. Is there any way we can ever get a feature on the best controllers for oldschool gaming ? (are there any for the 360 ?)
This being said, I hope those guys get to do more in the same spirit/ 8-bit /NES mash-up, can’t wait to see what they come up with next !
Well, congratulations, you’ve FINALLY found a game that makes me kind of want a 360. The head-juggling totally reminds me of Henry Hatsworth, which is one of my favorite games in recent history, and the cutscenes are spot-on Mega Man/Ninja Gaiden 8-bit perfection. Looks like something that should have been in Retro Game Challenge.
Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!
I actually got quite excited after seeing this, so I turned on my 360 and went to game marketplace. I couldn’t find it (odd) so I just clicked the link here and wanted to activate it from there.
It appears..THAT ITS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE EU?!
WHAT THE HELL?
Does anybody know why they wouldn’t release a game in the EU? Isn’t that just 1 more click (check the box for “Downloadable in EU”)?
Or does that have to do with translations to other languages? The languages that most people don’t even need..
I live in Denmark and i have not been able to find it…. But i found, (by comparing the US xbox.com to the DK) that the entire “indiegame” section of the xbl marketplace wasnt available either….. Bummer!

I should say, tho, aside from the rant, everything else looks GREAT. I mean President Lupin Hussain the third. Samurais juggling zombie heads, yeah.

I live in France and had no trouble getting it when it came out.
Don’t follow the link, just look for it in the games section of your 360.
I just checked, it’s just a bit tricky to find : you have to go to Games>Independent games>A to Z>T>THE Tempura of the dead.
Don’t forget the “The” at the beginning. You should have no trouble getting it there ;)
